Botchit and Scarper, a label only 5 years old, yet very much respected as a bold and dynamic one doing things the way they feel it should be done. Not moving with the trends but setting them, and continually pushing them further.

This release delivers ten emotion charged selections of trip hop, breakbeat, big beat, and, if I may, experimental garage. As the name hints this is a compilation of breakbeat tracks all delivered with lyrical magic. The way the lyrics are served up is what makes this album something special. You wont be finding any standard issue ‘white boy rapping for the masses’ here it’s all raw, rocky, and very real!

The unmistakable Shy FX delivers some dark energetic get down orders along side UK APACHI heading into the realms of jungle with their album opener “Nuttah Vs Bambatta” (sounds nice already doesn’t it!) T.Power is on the remix duties here and doesn’t disappoint. The album then goes from breaky 2 step to sinister sounding breakbeat leaving nothing untouched in between.

Other notable standout tracks include “Space Buddah” by Tek Ed & EQ, and my personal favourite “Tremelo 2000” by Orange Kush feat. Osprey. this is a deep dancefloor stormer lending heavily to a myriad of samples rather than a straight rapping/MCing style which is evident in most of the other tracks on this release.

This compilation is sadly the last work of the much respected late Vini J Medley who unfortunately passed away last week. If Breakspeech is anything to go by, the breaks scene has lost a great pioneer who knew his music and was continually trying to push it forward. A small note on the back of the cover says: “When we started this label nearly 5 years ago our agenda was simple – breaks, big bass and an emphasis on quality not quantity…”

Well congratulations to the Botchit crew for keeping things real. This is a compilation sure to appeal to anyone into their nu-skool breaks that prefer it a little darker with that ruff raw feeling as opposed to the more minimalistic breakbeat available (ala Bushwhaka!) and would probably also have some pull factor to people with a foot in the hip hop or Drum & Bass camps also. Overall a good compilation full of power and a fine testament to Vincent J Medley (RIP). Thanks Vinni !!
