Well I have finally gone out and bought a new cd, actually I ordered it but anyway. The one I chose was A Samuel L Session on Monoid. For those of you who don’t know, Samuel L Session or SLS is one of the funkiest MFs rocking the planet right now. Hailing from Sweden he is in with the clique of producers/DJs such as Ben Sims, Oliver Ho, Thomas Krome, Christian Smith etc etc.
This is his mix for the record label Monoid. Monoid has been reponsible for quite a number of very good releases of late and also an excellent mix cd by one of my favourites, Umek. Just looking at the track listing is enough to get anyone into techno and tech house excited….SLS, Richard Harvey, Jeff Mills, Oliver Ho, Trevor Rockcliffe and the list goes on. In total SLS cuts up 27 tracks in a mere 60 minutes!
SLS starts out funky and he never lets up. What surprised me was right from the outset he cuts it up big time. Sampling, scratching, backspinning, EQing and any other DJ trick you can name he does in pretty much the first track. From here on it is business. Layering and looping tracks left right and centre.
Just listening to this gets me very excited about seeing him DJ at Welcome 2001 down in Melbourne this NYE. I am unsure if he is playing any other cities but if you get the chance to see him then he won’t let you down. Deep, funky, tribal techno mixed up to the shithouse!
A Samuel L Seesion should be available from all good record stores (Reachin’, Hardware, Euphemism, BPM, Central etc) or you can order it from Juno Records
