“Hold your breath, make a wish, count to three…”
As this CD opens with the sultry vocals of Gene Wilder (as Willy Wonka) you realise that you could be listening to the perfect House release.
This is the highly anticipated second release from Manchester’s Crazy Penis (I’m sure there’s an amusing anecdote behind the name, but I haven’t been able to find it yet!) and with faultless production and a commitment to glamorous, languorous grooves it’s one piece of genitalia you won’t be able to resist.
The musical background and love of instrumentation of Crazy Penis strongly underpins this release, giving a brilliant warmth of sound through which Danielle Moore’s voice is allowed to shine.
This is definitely music for mature clubbers, but there’s a level of sophistication with Crazy Penis that goes beyond the myriad of compilations currently flooding the shelves – The Wicked Is Music shows a strong direction for the UK House scene, something that seems to be have been sadly lacking in recent times.
Apart from the brilliant opener of There’s A Better Place, stand-outs on this release include the sunny You Started Something; the San Fran-esque You Are We; and the sultry Mind Wide Open.
The Wicked Is Music is dance music for grown ups – but don’t be embarrassed, embrace your ability to afford to drink in the funky bars that have clearly inspired this great release.
