Right – hands up who’d like to see breaks tracks on the main floor more often? insert footage of this lass raising both hands in the air

It seems that Messrs Andy Gardner and Lee Rous -aka the Plump DJs – agree with me, citing the above as one of their primary objectives when putting together this release. Plump DJs tracks are currently the Prada of the dance industry. A slightly left of centre, funky, yet incredibly chic must have – particularly for any self-respecting breaks deejay.

The beauty of their work however, is that it’s equally as likely to appeal to lovers of any other genre which includes a liberal dose of funk and bass in the mix. Tracks such as ‘The Push’ and ‘Electric Disco’ are already instantly recognisable tracks which guarantee a DJ bodies on the dancefloor.

My personal pick for the piece would have to be ‘Scram’, 8 minutes of phat grinding nu skool style breaks. It’s a quite a stormer, built with tightly programmed breakbeats and edgy electric sounds, which builds to an booming crescendo.

The Plumps play around with ‘heavyweights’ such as Freestylers, reworking ‘Here We Go’, not my fave piece on the CD, but an interesting take. The album also contains their much sought after mix of War’s ‘Galaxy’ (a track that wouldn’t be out of place at a funky house night) and a rework of ‘Pucker Up!’ by, ahh ,Pucker Up!.

I’m going to have to make the ‘infectious’ call here again, because these are most definitely danceworthy tunes. While the duo use fairly tried and true formulas which aren’t particularly challenging, their production is tight, and one can’t deny that what they do, they do well.
