When you hear that a track is being played by the likes of Tayo, Meat Katie, and Steve Lawler, you know it must be one of those stunning genre mash-ups. Not only have Soul of Man (aka Justin Rushmore, & Jem Panufnikgiven) us a quality double-A sided record, but they shift effortlessly between old-skool acid house, nu-skool breaks, and hypnotising tribal.
The Drum is very reminiscent of Love Tattoo’s Drop Some Drums, but it brings in a more breakbeat styled kick. Mesmerising cymbals and funky squeaks combine into huge build-ups, and this is a definite peak-time track. Steve Lawler has called it “one of the best progressive tribal breaks tracks I’ve ever heard”; and no matter what genre you put this in, it’s sure to be a hit.
On the flip is an acid-meets-breaks number, Acid Punch. This just builds and builds, and has some old skool breakdowns. Very funky, with a dash of electro, and this is sure to keep the dancefloor moving. Awesome quality on both sides of this vinyl. Fingerlickin’ has just released this record, and it shows that there is more in their stable than just the party breaks.
