(Creative Vibes/Warp Records)
The latest single to be lifted from the Nightmares on Wax (aka George Evelyn) album of last year, Mind Elevation, is a tasty slice of hip-hop, layered with reggae and dub influences. Lyrically 70s/80s has an underlying theme of social awareness, providing a snapshot of Britain throughout NOW’s childhood and teenage years.
The Radio Edit is surprisingly laid back, even for a Nightmares on Wax track. Bordering on dub, there is a lot of space in the music, which leads to a real focus on the lyrics (obviously the purpose). The Up Bringing Mix, which features Roots Manuva, LSK, Rodney P and Tozz 180, picks up the pace a little with Manuva and co. adding their own distinctly British hip hop flavor. Pick of the bunch for me is saved until last with the RJD2 Remix. It has a much bouncier sound and added instrumentation, giving it overall a fuller sound.
Probably not their best work, however I think in the context of an entire album 70s/80s would fit into the jigsaw a lot better.
