Moving away from the Nu-Jazz sounds of the former releases in the series, Compost has opted for an eclectic selection of dub grooves, soul, deep techno, electro and jazz-fusion. The flow of the CD is impeccable for such a diverse range of artists including Season, of the Compost label, Alexander Kowalski, renowned techno producer and remixer and Japan’s Yellowtail aka Hiro Awanohara.
The release starts with Hird’s ‘Keep You Kimi’, a deep jazz chord filled mininalistic down tempo jazz number with some rather lovely vocals that lift the track. It’s the perfect way to open when you hear where the CD goes. Following this track it gets a little more electronic while still keeping the deeper lounge mood with Season’s ‘Juice’, a soulful electro dub production. The music starts to get slightly more electronic and broken up toward the middle until Triplane’s ‘Something To Get Exited About’ drops. This track is brilliant; combining funky double drumming (two live kits playing break beats) mixed with live music and added production by producer Chris Powell. At this point the CD starts to delve into the realms of tech influenced future jazz sounds with the next few tracks moving into some deep techno sounds. This section of the CD was really interesting, even though the music is essentially techno; they are probably the most reminiscent of the structure of original jazz than any of the other tracks. After this great little tech interlude the vibe goes back to jazz-fusion with some nice laid back tracks that include the haunting ‘Anywhere Anyone’ by DNTEL. Finally, the compilation closes with Savath & Savalas’ ‘Folk Song for Cello’, which moves back to the lounged sounds synonymous with compost releases but with a freshness and spirit that really pushes the sound.
This release features 6 previously unreleased and exclusive tracks, which is quite a bonus as it’s always refreshing to hear completely new and original music. The overall production across the album is brilliant with not only the music being a stand out but also the CD sleeve comes, as a package, with an original 3D graphic and a sporty pair of blue and red 3D glasses, nice.
