One of Sydney’s most popular club nights brings out their second dichotomy of dance sounds with Nik Fish and Jonathon Wall at the respective helms of Voodoo and Cargo. A ballsy release by a ballsy promoter. Combining a techno mix and a funky house mix in the one compilation.

Nik Fish mixes up the Voodoo CD and rightfully so. The sound created is that which is loved by many in the main room every Friday night. Starting off in the middle of the night with Liberation by Stoker, Nik keeps this techno pace with his patented sounds such as the military snare rolls in Club Quake by 5 below O and the 303 Acid of Moonphase by Swam & Bassliner. The vocals on Ravelabs Push are a bit Eurotrash for my liking but the hard edge is maintained with Modem by DJX 2000 being a standout for good production. Trancier elements come into play for the back end of the CD including Techno Harmony by Italian Superstar Mario Piu and a sped up version of Deleriums’ Silence which makes Sarah Mclachlans Voice sound a bit too chipmunkish for my liking. The re-release of Niks own project with Southend – The winner Is will be appreciated by the Voodoo fans. Although the timing of the release would appear to be a cash grab, the speed and hardness of the techno sound of this mix in particular ensures that it remains predominantly in Sydney techno clubs.

Quite simply, if you want to relive some of the sounds heard in the main room of HOME on Friday night then this is for you. Techno with a splash of trance mixed by one of Sydney’s best Techno DJ’s.

We jump in the crazy purple lift now, by passing the breaks and beats heading straight for the funky sounds of Jonathan Wall at the top in the Cargo room. A moment of reflection starts the mix with the ambient hippy philosophy of Lucidity by Kinobe before moving into sexy Latin voice of Leedia in Mi Destino (part 1) by Miguel Migs. The butt really gets a shakin’ throughout this mix with Aussies Craig Obey, Keith Krstin and Paul Flex Taylor deserving a mention for their super funky Give It To Me under the name of Subfactor. Turn It Out by Olav Basoski is a great piece of uplifting funk complete with slap bass and Drag Queen style vocals. The accordian sounds of Mi Destino (part 2) lead into more Latin sounds from Crystal Clear in Live Your Life. The aptly named Chunkus Mahunkus by Plastic Avengers has a great chunky Isaac Hayes style Vocal chant. Jonathan then takes the mix deeper with introspective tunes such as Sequins by Dano prior to lifting back into the wild percussion sounds of Drumz 4 by Si Begg vs Soli. The funk and Latin sounds continue to great effect prior to the uplifting soulful sounds of Feels So Strong by Richard F. Strangely the CD finishes with Dooms Night by Azzido Da Bass. It is mixed in well but leaves the listener on a different note to the rest of the CD.

Jonathans mix is definitely easier to listen to off the dance floor compared to Niks and I can’t see many people listening to both these CD’s back to back or liking them both equally due to their placement at either end of the house spectrum. Never the less a devoted Sublime fan used to changing rooms as their moods change will find this compilation appealing.
