(F-Communications)

Mr Garnier has been one of the key figures in the techno scene since the beginning, and his latest two-tracker shows off two distinct styles. Released on his own label (with Eric Morand), F-Communications; this is another quality release.

Sambou is an unbelievably haunting and spooky techno number. Layers of high-pitched piano keys, and eerie chords, combine with a very fast bass kick that would surely devastate any crowd. This is serious peak-time material though, and its placement in a set would be a critical factor. Sambou works very well with acapellas, and the track actually sounds decent on 45rpm as well!

On the flip is Psychadelik Shack, which is relatively downbeat for compared to the A-side. Jazz influences come into the track here, and beautiful tribal percussion melts into the spine-tingling chord that runs through the whole record. Techno purists be warned; this is more on the tech-house side of things. It is a nice track to listen to at home, but its dancefloor ability maybe limited.

A quality release for F-Communications, but wont appeal to everyone. With one listen of Sambou, it is clear that Laurent Garnier is destined to write horror film scores!
