(Tidy Trax/EQ)
The last 15 years has seen Anne Savage unstoppable in becoming one of the world top DJs and a global ambassador for all things hard. It was only natural that her talents would lead her to release her own album.
Music for the Harder Generation Vol. 1 is the first in Tidy Trax’s release of mixes by the likes of Paul Glazby, Lee Haslam, Yoji Biomechanika, Lisa Lashes and Superfast Oz. Anne’s mix features small sample Anne’s current styles at the moment – jackin’ hard house, trance and techno.
The first CD is the deeper of the two, opening up with the acid techno groove Sterling Moss’s Electro Ghetto and Marco V’s My Acid Pacemaker. The CD then pounds on from there, flowing through the grooves of One Inch Deeper by Fallen Angel and Rowland the Bastard onto the banging hard house numbers of Christiaan & Alex Calver’s Kick Back and Anne’s latest solo release Hellraiser. The song is a strange hypnotic mix of hard techno with a swirly tribal beat in the background; this is the essence of Anne’s style, with one of the best breakdowns I’ve heard in a long time.
Anne’s mixing skills are seamless; meaning I barely noticed any transition between the tracks and some of the most skillful I’ve heard to date, especially from a hard dance DJ, who often have a reputation of being lazy when it comes to transitions. Whilst Anne’s style sounds brilliant in a club; in a lounge room setting, the hypnotic techno thud can get overly repetitive about half way, resulting in a sort of mind numbing on the part of the listener.
The second CD is by far my favorite of the two, progressing much further that first with a much more melodic hard dance/trance base. The mix opens up perfectly with Tiesto’s well known remix of Umek – Gatex which sets the scene of the banging melodious tracks to follow, and before you know it (thanks to Anne’s mixing skills) you find yourself dancing around to the massive trance breakdowns of Tomcat – I’m Still Free and my personal favorite of the whole album: Ingo – Song 14.
Most interesting is another of Anne’s studio releases, Four Leaf Clover. Whilst I didn’t enjoy it as many of the other tracks surrounding it, it has a big driving melody and a satisfying percussion/breakdown. All too soon the CD ends with another Ingo banger: 48 Hours which has a really nice funky hard house sound to it.
Ideally, this album is recommended to anyone who likes their music like an old man on Viagra – fucking hard. We can only look forward more from this talented woman and Tidy Trax.
