(KS78/Kingsize)

Two of breakbeat’s production heavy weights return with the second in a series of two collaborations on Meat Katie’s own Kingsize imprint. With both producers known for their house predilection, Lee Coombs notorious for his Acid leanings and Katie for his Tribal tendencies, their combined forays into breakbeat were always likely to turn out top-notch.

Hum starts with a thumping drum pattern, with the kick present on all 4 beats throughout (undoubtabley one of the elements which gives the track its overall ‘housier’ sound). Add to that the piercing keyboards and percussive breakdown, and the end result is a first-class track with a somewhat retro feel. As its name suggests, Not House Music takes a much more syncopated approach, and ultimately is a little down on melody but heavy on rhythm, making it a somewhat monotonous but interesting nonetheless.

My pick of the two is definitely Hum, although to be overly critical I do find the keyboard a bit overbearing at times, but I’m definitely a big fan of its driving beat.
