Meat Katie & Elite Force - Ju Ju

Created On June 25th, 2004 by i_have_ADD

(TCR/Inertia)

Meat Katie and Elite Force’s debut on TCR, Ju Ju has been doing the rounds at renowned breakbeat night Hum (and presumably beyond), with press naming it as the ‘first Hum anthem’. On the A-side we have the Original Hum Mix, then on the flip Chew the Fat residents the Apollo Kids take up remix duties.

The promo CDR I was sent of these tracks included the cut down mixes, with both clocking in under 4 minutes thanks to the absence of intros/outros. This peeved me a little as it was hard to judge each track in the context of a set, but you make do! The original edit has a bouncing bassline with percussive and tribal rhythm. The track has a definite ‘house’ feel to it while still retaining a breakbeat sound (which of course is not surprising considering Meat Katie is involved!) The Apollo Kids reworking takes a more driving approach with the tribal element of the original removed in favour of a tight nu-skool sound.

Overall I found both mixes of Ju Ju a little monotonous, I think Meat Katie and Elite Force have both done better work individually AND collaboratively. My personal preference leans towards the Original Hum Mix, its tribal sound making it a little more memorable.
