Introducing ITM’s Friday Flashback

Over our ten years in existence, inthemix has accumulated a massive archive of event reviews and photo galleries from parties past. As a new weekly feature, we’re delving into the vaults for the Friday Flashback – after all, what are Fridays for if not wiling away some desk hours and getting freshly psyched for weekend shenanigans?

Every Friday, we’ll reminisce on a vintage gallery and talk to either the acts who played it or the promoters who put it on. For our first edition, we’ve gone back to 2006 for the almighty coming together of UK titans Sasha and John Digweed at (the now-defunct) Queensbridge in Melbourne.

The Cup Eve all-nighter boasted an extended set from the duo, who hadn’t gone back-to-back in Australia for five years. Apart from Digweed’s alarming new hairstyle, the set was notable for the way the two DJs melded seamlessly to take the ecstatic crowd on – yes – a ‘journey’ through progressive house and techno.

“For me it was amazing as both John and Sasha are good friends of mine,” Future Entertainment ringleader Mark James tells inthemix about that fateful night. “John is my personal all-time favourite DJ in the world; he’s the best. Merging those different aspects [of their styles] to make perfection is the genius of these two DJs.”

Despite the long time between joint Sasha & Digweed tours, Mark assures us it’s not for lack of enthusiasm from the legends. “It didn’t take any convincing, as they love to play together when possible. The hard part was finding the right time for both of them to become available to tour again, so there was a lot of pre-planning involved.”

Given how fat Diggers was for this tour, it's surprising he had the stamina for their epic sets. You'd think he would have requested a little piano stool or something. They did DJ for about 18 hours in a 4 day period that tour, not bad for a couple of older geezers.

Was a great night, I'd almost say it was one of my favourite medium sided events to date. To bad all the parties now days are either small club shows or festivals with very few medium/large events (Closest venue that even come close now is only the Metro / 2800 capacity).

Almost as good as their Northern Exposure Tour in 1997(?).... see, it pays to be old sometimes!
