The search is on for the greatest DJ of all time

Image for The search is on for the greatest DJ of all time

ITM knows from experience how epic an undertaking it is to put together big countdowns and lists, why, even this year we’ve had The Greatest Live Dance Acts and the Top Albums of the Decade not to mention this year’s shook-up inthemix50! Now our desk-bound dance brethren over at Mixmag are doing a list of their own, attempting to find and crown the greatest DJ of all time.

Launched this week, Mixmag’s search for the best DJ of, like, forever, has swung into full effect, with the UK publication urging fans to get online and cast their vote for their all-time #1 DJ.

But here’s the tricky part where fans start to bicker, as voters can only pick DJs from a list selected by Mixmag and a cast of international DJs who’ve nominated their personal favourites. It’s an interesting system, and the DJs polled offer up the reasons behind their picks in a series of video interviews, a choice few of which you can view below with the likes of James Zabiela praising Sasha and 2manydjs professing their love for Erol Alkan.

Check out and dissect the full nominations list below and head over to Mixmag.net to get votin’.

People will be very unhappy about Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk in there, and no Armin, haha. As ever, some glaring omissions there, but let's say Laurent Garnier, eh...

All of those Dj’s have done a lot of different and great things in their careers but I would say personally my favourite consistent Dj on that list is probably Coxy.

I voted for richie hawtin and allowed access for the facebook app. I then got an error message and something posted on my wall that I voted for Tiesto....

hatcha is an odd inclusion - he's done a lot for dubstep, and before that 2step/garage... but the 'greatest of all time' seems like a big call. maybe he was their token dubstep inclusion because it's a uk mag and they had to represent that sound somewhere in the list.

Definitely an interesting list - Erol's inclusion on there is a nice twist. I think I'd go with 2manydjs or an underdog vote for Jazzy Jeff. My only question now is which one of the techno dreamboats would JackT pick???

It has to be Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatherall or Francois K, hands down. All the other guys are talented and respected for their own reasons, yes, but Garnier, K and Weatherall are so much more than just DJs. They are artists behind turntables with a breadth and understanding of music that so many others can only hope to ever even have one fifth of.

Def Paul Oakenfold, he was a classic back in the late 90s early 00's. Now he is still going and pumping out epic tunes.

How can you name the greatest DJ ever? Its going to come down to personal preference really and perhaps it should be done by "general genres".

Tylerj23 - that's exactly why Francois K or Garnier should win. They aren't DJs known as big in a certain genre, they are just fucking DJs. And brilliant ones at that.

AndySan

AndySan said on the 21st Sep, 2010

That list is incomplete! It's not easy either, If I were voting for Paul Oakenfold it would have to be circa 1999/2000, now, I can't stand the majority of his new music, which is such a shame, because his old stuff is fantastic!

Wowk

Wowk said on the 21st Sep, 2010

Though to be fair, David Mancuso could arguably be the reason DJing is even the way it is these days...so he's a worthy vote too.

Bug Nates

Bug Nates said on the 21st Sep, 2010

Stupid poll is stupid.
How the fuck do you determine who is the greatest when they all play different music for different reasons. Some are turntablists, some are long journey set djs, some are selectas.

Why the constant need to have polls and declare a number 1?

Just enjoy the music.

Putting aside personal preferences, who do people think should win? Based purely on having read all the profiles/watched all the videos, I think it should go to Francis Grasso, David Mancuso, Larry Levan or Frankie Knuckles, if only for the sheer fact they deserve the credit for what they've done for any of those contemporary DJs to even have jobs, let alone be listed on that short list. In terms of considering all sorts of factors so that you could arguably put everyone on a level playing field (hard to do, I know), I'd still say Laurent Garnier, Francois K or Weatherall because of their ecletic taste and also the fact they have gone beyond just DJing and done things like create live shows, run their own clubs, etc.

I'm with Zabiela on this one, Sasha's mixing, emotional depth, longevity, innovation, and integrity make him the best DJ I've come across yet. Pity about some of the missing names from the list (but I'm bloody glad Armin and Tiesto didn't make it!)

I believe Sven Vath was hitlers disciple and not a DJ?... Im guessing Paul Van Dyk is a lesbian by the name of Paula who dropped the 'a' ? .... and Laurent Garnier? n*gga please .. (no carl, im not referring to you, relax your out of proportion ball sacks) Garnier sounds like a brand of hair product, if i wanna see a tub of wax spin some discs, ill go to my bathroom thank you very much---------------------------THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD/DJ-----there is only ONE possible winner--------Timmy. Wowk

Wowk said on the 24th Sep, 2010

Meldi - other DJs at the upper eschelon of dance music, from my understanding. As if Armin is seriously worthy of "greatest DJ of all time". The dude is great, yes, but to even try and compare his impact on DJing with the likes of Francis Grasso (without whom Armin wouldn't even have a job) is just narrow-minded. It's not "favourite DJ of all time", it's "greatest". Put aside your personal tastes and read all the bios and seriously consider who deserves that crown.

I don't know enough about the tech/house djs to comment but vath, hawtin and sasha probably my favourites there, and I saw morillo last year and he was pretty awesome!as for trance; not having Armin is a load of crap, only reason he didn't get a nomination is because he's smashed djmags polls for the last 4 years
