The Bloody Beetroots say electro is ‘overrated’

Italian masked DJs gone synth-punks, The Bloody Beetroots, have made ruffling feathers something of a vocation recently with some infamous clubbing rants and traumatic live shows. Hell, they even managed to shake up the guys who’ve booked them for next year’s Big Day Out festival. Clearly still on the provocative tip, the group’s head honcho Bob Rifo has turned his icy glare to the genre that he’s famous for mastering.

Rifo’s words come from a recent interview on the Death Crew 77 website, in which the masked producer detailed his love for classic records from Herbie Hancock and Afrika Bambaata before naming the electro scene as his pick for the ‘most overrated genre in dance music’.

While this glib remark might seem like the pot calling the kettle black, it could perhaps be the beginning of a new chapter for the ‘Beetroots. Perhaps Rifo has been taking advice from Busy P and decided to kick his stage-diving habits! Or maybe The Bloody Beetroots are going in a minimal direction like converted techno-head Steve Aoki. Or maybe he’s just taking the piss. Whatever way, we’ll find out if Rifo and the ‘Beetroots still sound ‘electro’ when they arrive for the summer party season ahead.

These clowns won't be around in a year or two (that's an iron-clad guarantee), so let them spout their nonsense for now....

lol sorry was being facietous.

Re: relevance - a guy who has spent the last 5 or so years ripping off all that is bad with electro and having a few forgetable top 20 hits now comes out and says that its all shit. nonsensical garbage designed to do nothing more than sell a few more tickets to some random festival that these 'badboys' will be PLaying at next.

far be it for me to tell itm how to do its job - but can we PLease get some more articles that are relevant to good dance music? you guys do have a say in the direction of this stuff - like could we get an interview with benno de goeij (or whatever his name is) the guy that really wrote armin van buuren's new album? now that would be a good read..or perhaps an article on richie hawtin where he actually discusses the meaning of what minimal actually is as an artform. Or perhaps Sasha can exPLain his thoughts on where he believes dance music is going as the tech house phenomena gradually fades and how he feels about his new style with the festival sets hes PLaying these days.

nonono - bloody beetroots saying their own music is overrated...real dance music news there.

not tryna start an internet flame war just thoughts

That's cool dude, I didn't take offense, I think it's just interesting to see an artist like this do a bit of a 180 and piss in their own sink, so to speak. And everything's subjective, while BB aren't too everyone's taste - understandably - to call them irrelevant when they've managed to sell out three seperate tours in Australia in the space of a year and shift a lot of units in a time when that's very difficult is not cool. For better or worse, right now they're a force in dance music.

Moving on, your ideas do all sound pretty cool. I know we've got a good Sasha feature coming up, so look out for that, but the idea of ghost producers is certainly an interesting one!
