Another ‘Greatest DJ of All Time’ list...

Earlier this year ITMers vigorously discussed the results of Mixmag’s contentious ‘Greatest DJ of All Time’ poll which crowned the supreme master of trouse himself, Tiesto, as the best to ever grace the decks ahead of the field of nominees including Sasha, Sven Vath, Larry Levan, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Tony De Vit.

Now a similar list has been published online by Music Radar in an attempt to offer a new perspective on history’s greatest disc jockeys. Unlike the Mixmag list, this countdown of the top 20 DJs of all time has not been open to public vote, so you can take it with a few hundred grains of salt. Lists like these usually ignite some pretty interesting debate and it is Friday after all.

The Music Radar list is quite a comprehensive tally of turntable greats, with storied artists like David Mancusco, Carl Cox and DJ Cash Money ranking highly, as do innovative acts like DJ Yoda and Cut Chemist. As well as a few curveballs, there’s a very strong hip-hop presence in the list with Jam Master Jay, DJ Qbert and Z-Trip all storming the list. Indeed, it’s the one and only Grandmaster Flash that takes out the top spot.

You can check out the full top 20 below and leave your thoughts on how this list stacks up against Mixmag’s picks and your own all time #1 DJ.

1.Grandmaster Flash
4.DJ Qbert
5.Mr. Scruff
6.DJ Yoda
7.Cut Chemist
8.Jam Master Jay
9.Norman Jay MBE
10.Carl Cox
11.DJ Cash Money
12.Kid Koala
13.David Rodigan
14.The Chemical Brothers
15.DJ Marky
16.DJ Andy Smith
17.Solid Steel DJs
18.DJ Chuckie
19.DJ Alfredo
20.David Mancusco

1/2 this list could do more behind the decks at age 12 than Tiesto could now.

Also disappointed to not see Pauly D on there! haha

While i do feel Turntablists, Hip Hop & Early Disco/Groove DJs are some of the most important DJs of all time (i was disgusted with that mixmag list),i think this list is horrible.
I'm sorry but Z Trip, Coldcut, Mr Scruff, Kid Koala!? All incredible but hardly top 20. Why Norman Jay & Andy Smith over people like Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge or Keb Darge? Cut Chemist but no Shadow? The fact Larry Levan has not made either list is disgusting. in fact there are no house DJs in this list. I could pick at this forever. I realize its just a list and its always going to be subjective to peoples tastes but this doesn't look very logical at all.

the last time the Chems were proper DJ's must have been at the Heavenly Social in 1994.

i like how people have voted according to dj's and not producers(very often confused). Like if you compare Tiesto to dj Qbert... Tiesto is one of the best electronic producers but Qbert is hands down a better dj.
