Lazy pop sampling strikes again: Beyonce vs Major Lazer

Image for Lazy pop sampling strikes again: Beyonce vs Major Lazer

ITMers will likely remember the shit-storm that erupted earlier in the year when Black Eyed Peas main offender Will.i.am didn’t so much as sample Boys Noize’s club hit Yeah but jacked an untouched and unauthorised version for his own dodgy tune.

The trend of lazy dance ripping is set to continue on though with the latest account finding US megastar Beyonce lifting liberally from Pon de Floor, Diplo and Switch’s big hit from their Major Lazer project.

Entitled Girls (Who Run The World), Beyonce’s new single borrows heavily from Pon de Floor, jacking pretty much the entire structure of the original production.

In defense of the single, the sampling is slightly more creative than Will.i.am’s attempt at nabbing some club cool, with flourishes of additional production sprucing up Girls. What’s more the Pon de Floor sampling is actually legit, with Diplo and Switch serving as co-producers of the track. Good for them at least!

You can hear the two tunes side by side below although the Beyonce tune will likely get pulled from YouTube very quickly. There’s an extra clip below that shows Beyonce’s dance troupe practicing moves for the video shoot to Pon de Floor however, showing just how much of a blueprint that track is to the diva’s new dance sound.

Wait, so it is a legit track that just borrows heavily from what worked for the producers before? This isn't anything new, slow news day?

Its a bit rich to call this lazy sampling when its legit, diplo and switch are just reusing their beat, it is crap though

That Beyonce song is absolutely terrible.

If it's legit, it's not really a big deal. Sure, it makes Beyonce look unoriginal, but it's not the same as the rip off with the boyz noise track.

As for sampling, nothing wrong with it as dance music was built on samples, but some of the recent examples (especially snoop dog's new track) just take the main hook of the song- not exactly very clever!

Call me crazy but I really do think it's lazy sampling and of a song that's not even 2 years old. There are few structural changes to it and it just seems like another fobbed off attempt to grab some club 'edge' and apply it to a mainstream artist.

I recently discovered that James Blake's 'Limit To Your Love' was originally performed by Fiest. They're both top notch.

im pretty sure deadmau5 gave that chick the go ahead before it got released, although i may be wrong. however all these ppl these days jacking old trance/house/etc riffs and putting some shite vocals over the top of it, thats a bit shady..

has anyone else noticed that most of the top 20 mainstream hits in Aus ( and i presume the US as well) seem to be "dance club-style" songs now? much less r'n'b/hip hop and a lot more house/electro.
