triple j kicks off Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time

Image for triple j kicks off Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time

As well as the station’s annual summer countdown of the previous year’s top 100 songs as voted by the listening and trolling public, triple j has been in the mood of running mid-year polls under their Hottest 100 banner recently including the Hottest 100 Songs of All Time which was predictably scooped by Nirvana the other year. 2011 will find the national youth broadcaster at it again though, with the greatest Australian albums ever made filling this year’s subject matter.

Officially launched today, the Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time invites listeners to vote on their 10 favourite LPs from Australian artists to form a definitive countdown in the second week of July (4th-10th). That comes with some stipulations of course; you can only vote for full length albums – so no EPs, mini-albums or greatest hits collections allowed – and, of course, the artists must be Australian. Australian citizens who currently and mainly work overseas are fine as are overseas born musicians who live (or have lived) and have (or have had) a base in Australia, meaning Ladyhawke manages to scrape in.

Whittling down your fave local albums to just 10 is a decidedly difficult task but to help you on your way triple j has canvassed more than 175 ‘industry experts’ including musicians like members of Pnau and Cut Copy and media types like, um, me to put together a starter 100.

Interestingly enough that industry-voted list features some major dance music domination with showings from big guns of the scene like The Presets and Empire of the Sun as well as AWOL sample kings The Avalanches whose Since I Left You takes out the top spot. Perhaps that’ll spur ‘em on to really finish that new album.

Check out the industry list below to get you thinking about your votes and then head over to the Hottest 100 site to vote on your own favourites.
