Hits and a few misses with 2011 Ibiza DJ Awards

While we’re currently in the final stages of our own inthemix awards poll – last days, people! Vote here! – and thus madly running around like headless chooks that doesn’t mean we’ve been ignoring what’s been going down overseas, namely with this week’s announcement of the Ibiza DJ Awards.

Though it’s now into its 14th year of gong-dishing, the Ibiza DJ Awards seems to carry far less prestige than most other ceremonies of its ilk. Perhaps it’s due to the awards’ abominable homepage which seemingly hasn’t received a makeover since 1999. Or it could be the branding that comes with it;

“Fire is the theme for the 2011 DJ Awards, which changed the history of humanity and civilization. It’s a symbol used for millions of years at music gatherings, it’s a source of inspiration and purification, it’s the creator of power of life, energy and change which represents spirituality, enlightenment and renewal, and it’s going to set this night on fire!”

Fire…will…set the night on…fire. Oh boy. Oddities aside, the nominations for this year’s awards have been announced and it contains the usual smattering of familiar faces and few women with Eric Prydz, Axwell, Afrojack, Carl Cox and Armin van Buuren running the show in their respective categories.

There’s a couple of doozies mind you, with the ‘Urban’ category for instance being a strange name for the ‘UK Bass’ field and the ‘Eclectic House’ crop of artists including everyone from Guy Gerber to Steve Aoki and Trentemoller. Go figure?
