If, like us, you’re often tuned in to the BBC Radio 1 streaming player, you’ll be interested to know there are big changes afoot in 2012. No, they’re not ditching the Essential Mix. However five of Radio 1’s dance music experts – Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Kissy Sell Out, Fabio & Grooverider – will be hanging up the headphones to make way for a new DJ line-up.
From April 2012, dubstep trailblazers Skream & Benga, pop-leaning bass fiend Toddla T, London hip hop identity Charlie Sloth and drum & bass roller Friction will all be hosting their own shows on the station.
“It’s important that Radio 1 continues to develop new talent and the station keeps evolving for our young listeners,” said Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper in a statement. “These changes to our evening schedule will strengthen the range and depth of the specialist music offering on the network.”
Gilles Peterson had this to say about his long stint nearing an end: “I’ve had an amazing 13 years at Radio 1 – to be able to get away with the radical music that I’ve pushed out has always surprised me and I thank Radio 1 for giving me the freedom to do that.”
As for Judge Jules, he’s off to become an Entertainment Lawyer (for real), while keeping the weekends for DJing. So, will you be tuning in to these new shows?
