Above & Beyond take out Essential Mix of the Year (again)

At the tail-end of each year, followers of BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix vote on the best show from the last 12 months. In 2011, the shortlist of 15 included a Planet E celebration from Detroit legend Carl Craig, futuristic bass music from Jamie XX, a funk and disco throwback with Dimitri From Paris, Eric Prydz recorded live at Creamfields in the English countryside and more from across the dance music spectrum. However, none of the above struck a chord quite like Above & Beyond’s two-hour set of “trance 2.0” that was aired midway through the year.

Above & Beyond won Essential Mix Of The Year back in 2004, and the fans once again voted in force. “The mix is intentionally non-linear,” explained Tony McGuiness of their effort. “It encompasses film score, progressive, breaks and trance 2.0, the new groove-driven variant of our sound.” The tracklist covers a range of Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep releases alongside some of the trio’s trustiest remixes and club versions.

“As ever the standards were incredibly high over the last 12 months, so we don’t envy you choosing a winner,” says the Essential Mix don Pete Tong as he announces the victor, “but in the end you went for a worthy winner.” Above & Beyond’s Essential Mix is streaming again at the BBC Radio 1 website, and you can of course look forward to seeing the guys steering the Creamfields Australia juggernaut in autumn 2012.

Have to say I thought the Art Department or Soul Clap Essential Mix's were the best!

Seriously though, that essential mix is very solid and has no cheese. The progression is so solid.
