Deadmau5 to Madonna: "F#ck off you f#cking idiot"

Image for Deadmau5 to Madonna: "F#ck off you f#cking idiot"

If there’s one dance music personality who prefers honesty to PR-friendliness, it’s Deadmau5. Today sees the outspoken star offer his opinion (in no uncertain terms) on what’s shaping up to be one of inthemix’s biggest stories of the week: Madonna’s awkward intro for Avicii at Ultra Music Festival. His sticking point: the ‘molly’ reference that no doubt saw traffic to urbandictionary.com spike on Saturday night. Do we really need to add the ‘sic’s below?

“Very classy there Madonna,” he wrote on his Facebook, followed by an avalanche of ‘Likes’. “’HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ Such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! fucking cant smack my head hard enough right now.”

One rant wasn’t enough, though, with a ‘clarification’ following: “Seriously, i giveth not a fucking single FUCK for slating on madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy … i can appreciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? That’s your big contribution to EDM? Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs? fuck off you fucking IDIOT. fuck.”

Deadmau5 has had a close working relationship with Ultra Music Festival, and last year he was tasked with headlining one of the nights. In 2012, though, he opted to spend his Miami time running workshops for aspiring producers rather than joining the fray at Bayfront Park. That said, the festival may not be clamouring to have him back following his comments earlier this year in a ustream with fans. “Ultra to me is like the definition of insanity,” he said. “It’s doing the same fucking thing every year, expecting different results every time. Why would you go every year? 595 fucking dollars for a ticket?”

Well, that’s that. Maybe we can ask Avicii what he made of Madonna’s ‘hipsterspeak’ when he lands in Sydney next month…

Harsher than some would like, but on the money. Possibly a more desperate attempt to connect with the EDM audience than Hilton's track.

I dunno... I actually respect Madonna in a lot of ways, because she did support electronic music from the beginning, since way before it reached the current level of popularity in the US. She is actually genuinely in tune with electronic culture. And isn't there something kinda cool about your grandma validating your drug use? Come one now, as if we're all Sally Sober everytime we go out... Whether we're listening to EDM or not. What the fuck do we have to prove to the conservative elements of society anyway? :P

I highly doubt that any males in the EDM industry attract quite so many comments about their age.

Madonna has more talent in her pinky than Deadmau5 has in his whole shitty being.

Aaronnnnn said on the 26th Mar, 2012

What a fucking idiot. Like his shit commercial prog does anything for the "integrity" of edm. And like his fascist view on the culture is something we should bow down to. I enjoy the music regardless, but I sure as hell know what got me into it, all those years ago.

F_Grimes

F_Grimes said on the 26th Mar, 2012

This isn't about who's more "talented" you knobs, Deadmau5 (even though I dislike him mostly) is 100% correct. Why should it be okay for her be making drugs references like that to thousands of young people? Just because she's an old hag who's been around for 80 years?

angy

angy said on the 26th Mar, 2012

All the comments about her age are pretty much misogynistic - do you give Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Sasha, Digweed, Lawler, Jeff Mills, any of them grief about how old they are? Lighten up on the drug use too LOL, how uptight do we have to be on the subject?

mlirosi

mlirosi said on the 26th Mar, 2012

I dont think the issue is her age here, I mean we all saw vath (seasoned veteran) after future get on more gear than the club collectively did, the issue here is that the only way Madonna thinks she can relate to EDM audience is through drug references, the industry isnt that shallow and she obviously is going for the cheap cheer

angy

angy said on the 26th Mar, 2012

Yeah well, like I said, she has a tie to the electronic music scene that long predates EDM's breakthrough popularity in the US, whether you guys realise it or not

lawlietskyy

Interesting battle, Madonna being the pioneer she is can do whatever the fk she wants really, her support and on-going promotion of electronic music is definitely apparent and commendable, though i agree with mau5 that she shouldn't be making drug references, for the simple reason EDM has come so far as to break the connotation between the music and drug use... Madonna simply reinforced a negative stereotype as perhaps a means of connecting with the younger generation.. Annoys me a bit too how casual drug use and EDM are.

mlirosi

mlirosi said on the 26th Mar, 2012

Agreed lawlietskyy EDM has worked so hard to remove the stigma of drugs that has followed (and rightly so) Madonna will get more airplay in her 90 second rant than any of EDM%u2019s pin up boys, if she has been making/supporting EDM for days or years she would fully understand the direction EDM is trying to move, it is not hard to see the implications of Maddonas molly quote angy

Silkyyy

Silkyyy said on the 26th Mar, 2012

I don't get how she is considered a pioneer of EDM? She may have supported it from the start but it's not like any of her electronic songs changed the way we saw EDM... or were any good for that matter.

Daedmau5 sentiment that MDNA is just grasping at another hit, this time co-opting the hot right now ness of dance music to get there is on the money.

She's not one's of us, she's using us.

I think there's a line in the sand between people in the dance music industry who care about it, spend their energy trying to build it and make good things happen in it and those who come along when it's going well, shit on everything and then go back to writing love songs on acoustic guitar when they can't go platinum with a beat and bassline.

I know which side of the line DM5 is on and thus I back him 100% against MDNA, GO SON!

brown820

brown820 said on the 26th Mar, 2012

The only reason Madonna's age comes into this is because it is was drives her to 're-invent' herself so frequently to connect with the younger audience. She's trying it with this MDNA bullshit and it's off the mark entirely.

muse

muse said on the 27th Mar, 2012

lol @ Madonna "using us"

it should be noted that many huge EDM producers rely on work outside of their own music ie. producing albums for people like Madonna etc etc to make their careers feasible.

as well as pop, she's been releasing (commercial) house, techno, trance and electronica for a looooong time now

Deadmau5 is an attention seeking drip who pads out lulls in his own musical output by making 'controversial' statements on social media. yawn.

ezza69

I really don't see what the big deal is about what Madonna said... it's pretty much acceptable for rappers to make references to weed, so why can't she do the same considering EDM and mdma have been in bed together for aslong as I can remember

Hell there's even an article on itm (an EDM site) about a movie coming out called Ecstasy

tommyhans

tommyhans said on the 27th Mar, 2012

She's now claiming it was a reference to the Cedric Gervais tune called 'Molly' which is doing the rounds post Miami.

Everyone sticking up for Madonna is clearly missing the point Deadmau5 was trying to make. It wouldn't matter if she invented the fu*king Roland 303 - it has nothing to do with how much she's supported EDM in the past (LOL), the point is - she is a MASSIVE influence to millions of people and the fact is, someone of her stature should not be making drug references like that.. especially when EDM already gets a bad rep for being full of drugs.

I'm with deadmau5 on this one. And F_Grimes elaborated it all quite nicely few posts up. Regardless of her importance in music history (well she and her career are that old...), she came off as lame here, and he gets respect for speaking up his mind openly. Ha, he probably just wrote what many were thinking anyway...
