DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs 2012 list revealed

The April issue of DJ Mag has hit newsstands in the UK, and contained within is the magazine’s annual round-up of the top 100 clubs in the world. 2012 is the third year that the winners have been decided by public votes, whereas in the past it was chosen by DJs. As such, the feel of the list has shifted, and there are some notable changes from 2011.

What hasn’t changed is the name in the top spot: Space Ibiza. Last season, the sprawling superclub heaved all week with residencies from Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Kehakuma and the storied We Love…Sundays. Cox calls Space “the Rolls Royce of clubs”, and it looks like DJ Mag readers back him up.

Brazil’s Green Valley moves up to #2, after leaping up a massive 50 spots last year, cementing Brazil’s reputation as an ascendant dance music destination. Ibiza’s other entries in the top 10 are Amnesia and Pacha. The latter looks set to cement its position in 2012, with a new residency from Tiesto (departing Privilege) and David Guetta’s ever-lucrative F*** Me I’m Famous Thursdays. The Swedish House Mafia, however, have left the building.

Perhaps the biggest success story of the top 20, though, is the lavish Marquee at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, which jumped 69 spots to claim the #11 post. With estimated profits of $80 million in 2011, Marquee certainly has the money in the bank to hold onto its roster of A-list guests.

Among the Top 100’s new entries are Barcelona’s hedonistic Row 14, the ridiculously extravagant Ushuaïa Beach Hotel in Ibiza and Vegas mega-club Haze. This year, there are no Australian clubs in the list.

1. Space, Ibiza
2. Green Valley, Brazil
3. Pacha, Ibiza
4. Fabrik, Madrid
5. Zouk, Singapore

My first night out in Ibiza was at Space and it'sno surprise. Ibiza clubs are unique - everyone there is losing their shit in amazement at actually being in Ibiza after a lifetime waiting and there's a huge focus on the music rather than the bitches and everyone is in the best spirit. And it's a global crowd. Amazing memories. Privilege you can't prepare yourself for till you're in there, every club in Ibiza could fit in it - HUGE.
