Here we are, looking ahead to another party-packed weekend in Sydney. The place to be on Friday night (if you managed to score a ticket, that is) is the Sydney Opera House Studio for Future Classic’s Vivid get-together. It’s been a little while since the last party from the local tastemakers, and this time they’re bringing German veteran Isolee, NYC dancefloor-burner Jacques Renault and fast-rising local star Flume. Expect some top-shelf house, disco and warm techno.
Vivid Sydney continues on Saturday night with one of the most-anticipated shows of the year so far: Amon Tobin’s awe-inspiring ISAM Live. We’ve heard so much about the game-changing structure, and seen enough YouTube uploads, that a first-hand experience is long overdue. “It might be hard to see what this show is all about if you’re watching it on YouTube, but really, it’s a mixture of a cinematic experience and a live experience,” Tobin told inthemix. “You’re not just watching visuals as a backdrop to a DJ. It’s really a very, very well-thought-out, storyboarded, linear thing that’s inherently linked to each sound in the music.”
Saturday’s line-up of parties is actually one of the biggest we’ve seen in a while – let alone on the first weekend of winter. For the hip hop heads, there’s the triple-bill of Ghostface Killah, Doom and Chino XL, while bass fiends are also well-served around town.
If your tastes run to house and techno, you’re completely spoiled for choice. There’s recent Fabric recruit Levon Vincent bringing New York to Mad Racket’s hallowed dancefloor, touring team Desyn Masiello and Tom Morgan flying the Faciendo flag at One22, plus plenty more. For the disco lovers, Frank Booker is headlining a People Must Jam warehouse party. The weekend rounds out nicely at the Sydney Opera House with a screening of the much-anticipated LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up And Play The Hits. It’s the kind of weekend that makes you happy to live in the Harbour City.
