The long-running DMC DJ Championship has announced its return for 2012 and is set to kick off the Australian leg of the competition at the end of the month.

The Championships are a Simon Cowell-free search for the world’s next big DJs. State competitions held in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide will find the most promising DJ from each respective state, who will then move on to the national finals in Melbourne mid-August. The national winner will then be flown to the UK in September to compete in the world finals.

In a first for the DMC Championships, contestants will be allowed their choice of digital vinyl system and mixer, from which they’ll have to create their best 6-minute routine with two turntables. Last year, the DMC Championships announced they were entering the digital age and establishing the Online DJ Championship, and the Online Comp continues this year with submissions open until June 25. Head to the DMC website for more info.

In other DJing competition news, Dutch David Guetta-headlined festival XO Extrema Outdoor has announced that it’s launching “DJ Roulette” – and as the title would suggest, it’s based on online sausage fest Chat Roulette. DJ Roulette will see contestants perform via live stream, with the audience giving DJs the boot when they’ve lost interest in their set. The prize on offer is a closing set at XO in July, and registrations via the DJ Roulette website close June 26.
