Big Day Out 2013 line-up revealed

Image for Big Day Out 2013 line-up revealed

We usually have to wait until September to get a look at the Big Day Out line-up for the summer ahead, but this time ‘round the festival is itching to get started early. We already know that 2013 tickets go on-sale on Thursday 19 July, and now comes the all-important line-up reveal for the tour. Ahead of the weekend, inthemix heard from Big Day Out HQ that the bill would feature “six acts playing their first ever Australian shows, close to 30 acts who’ve never played BDO before and at least 16 acts with new albums coming.” After that tantalising number-crunching, here’s the real deal to get stuck into.

The mainstage drawcards are Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Killers, but as ever there’s a strong dance contingent. As predicted following the teaser by Bob Cornelius Rifo, the Bloody Beetroots will be leading the Boiler Room with an all-new show. After bringing the Death Crew 77 live band to BDO and DJing on the mainstage at Stereosonic 2011, Rifo has something previously unseen planned for 2013. As he exclusively told inthemix today: “I cannot tell you much except that it will be a big step forward. Both musically and theatrically speaking. Having played my songs with Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 and Bloody Beetroots DJ set, I have gained a new vision of the project – a more versatile, more compact, more furious and more dance-inducing vision.”

Along with the Beetroots, the line-up also features another of dance music’s marquee names – U.S. house stadium-filler Kaskade. Currently on the road in North America with his Freaks Of Nature headline tour, the DJ is sure to be polished form by the time our summer rolls around. Australia is one of his favourite destinations, but this will be his first Big Day Out. Also locked on is Dutch big-room player Nicky Romero, whose 2012 has been stellar so far. Romero has proven to be dance music’s go-to-guy in recent years, hooking up in the studio with names like Avicii, David Guetta, Zedd, Fedde Le Grand and Hardwell. Then there’s the Boiler Room bookings of electronic tearaways Crystal Castles, who’ve wowed the tour before, U.S. superstar Pretty Lights, festival-stage specialist Morgan Page and more, so check out the full list below.

Would like to see Jeff the Brotherhood and Animal Collective, but at $165 with this lineup? No way.

Gambino doing a side show would make me a happy camper

Boiler room is shitty, which is a real bummer. Peppers would be good though.

"band" side of things is not bad. Boiler room side of things is laughable

BDO will never be as good as they used to be with the boiler room side of things again. But I'm very happy with this line up considering the last few years.

Strange boiler room lineup - seems more like a side stage at Parklife or Stereosonic....

I think people are forgetting that the live music landscape in Australia has changed drastically over the past decade and need to realise that because of this, we won't be seeing the epic BDO line-ups of the late 90's/early 00's anytime soon.
10 years ago, BDO was the only big name festival in Australia, with next to no competition, so of course they were going to have every massive/popular name on the bill at the time.

When you take into consideration festivals like Stereosonic, Future and Parklife catering primarily to electronic music, Soundwave covering the punk/metal/rock sector, then 100 other smaller festivals inbetween, BDO are left in a difficult position to keep everyone happy. Considering the over-saturation of the festival market at the moment, I think they've done quite well, definitely better than the last 2 years. And don't forget there's usually 3 announcements too, hopefully a little more to come in the hip-hop department.

I've been to every BDO for the last 8 years and has always been my favourite festival simply because they cover all bases and cater for almost all tastes in music, if you can't go to BDO and have a good time or find any artists you like then you're failing at life. Everyone's a hater these days.

At least i know there will be no clashes, since there's only 1 band I'm going for..

Bloody Beatroots... Bloody who?

Been attending the BDO since 1996 and what a shite line-up for the boiler room.... Where is carl Cox when you need him, he is Australia around this time, GET HIM BOOKED!!!!!

Chilli Pepers would be good, but not worth it for $165, prices are going out of control!!!

Next year maybe.... or maybe not?

itmo said on the 16th Jul, 2012

yeahs, foals, animal collective, crystal castles, sleigh bells, ye. bdo, nah.

DirtyKnees said on the 18th Jul, 2012

...WHY do they keep bringing out bloody beetroots death crew? All we want is a fucking DJ set from those guys. This lineup is disgusting and i will not be attending. I used to go for the boiler room lineup and a few other bands here and there (mainly converse stage) and ive heard form a reliable source that there will be no sideshows this year, at all. So i guess after the last few years where a lot of people have gone to the sideshows as opposed to festival they want to stop that i guess, and after the slow ticket sales early this year (second sydney show) i guess they've learnt that the name 'big day out' isn't all they need to sell out a festival anymore.

Double priced drinks with half the alcohol content... un-australian!!!

ARE YOU A FESTIVAL HEAD? contemplating European festivals? Here's a good guide! Photos, videos and reviews. or follow 'Raymo' on facebook!

Amosse said on the 24th Jul, 2012

They had a DJ set at Stereosonic and it was complete shit. Death Crew is much better than their DJ alternative.

Bracko said on the 24th Jul, 2012

Sydney 18th and not the 26th :?

DirtyKnees said on the 26th Jul, 2012

^ death crew at 2011 BDO was shit too.

Edit: Keep getting my years mixed up.
