It’s been a while between drinks for Stuart Price’s alter ego Jacques Lu Cont, but in 2012 the faux-Frenchman is firing again. Already he’s given us singles Reload, Church and Underground, reminding us of the electro talent we saw bubbling up in the early 2000s. This Spring, the celebrated studio whiz is heading to Parklife in his DJ guise, playing alongside The Presets, Robyn, Justice, Nero and many more.

The Australian visit follows a very busy tour run for Lu Cont, having ticked off recent sets at the Sonar, Melt, Coachella and Exit festivals. He’s also making return trips to Ibiza for Pete Tong’s Pacha residency and a slot alongside 2manydjs and Erol Alkan at the Ushuaia Beach Club this weekend. In between all this activity, he put together an Essential Mix for Tong, an opportunity he quips he waited 15 years for.

Introducing the mix, Tong asks Price what led him back to his club-focused moniker. “I was sitting in the studio making pop records, and I just found that the only place I got new ideas was in clubs and DJing,” he says. “But I knew I couldn’t really do both at the same time. After I’d done a string of albums, I thought there was never going to be a better time to go back and rediscover something that I love doing.” As for whether we can expect a Jacques Lu Cont album: “I don’t know whether it’s going to be Les Rythmes Digitales, Jacques Lu Cont or a Thin White Duke album – I think the material always has to lead the way.”

The DJ’s Essential Mix features some of his own studio outings and distinctive remixes, alongside gear from contemporaries like Etienne De Crecy, Digitalism, Herve and Pryda. “There are four or five new songs in there,” he tells Tong. “There are new ideas, things that I’ve been playing in sets, ‘cause I wanted to have some exclusives that would only appear here. But the other cool thing is that there are some mellow, ambient sections towards the end. Rarely you’re going to get in a situation where at 4am you can go there on a dancefloor. But for this, it was perfect.” Take a listen to his mix below.
