The Perth-bred, London-settled ShockOne is heading home this Spring, and he’s got a hefty national tour booked in to take him through to the Fat As Butter festival. Kicking off in Sydney with a bass-heavy affair at Oxford Art Factory, the DJ known on his passport as Karl Thomas will take his “impact music” to clubs around the country. There’s also the promise of ‘guests’ along the way, so stay tuned for that.

2012 has been busy so far for ShockOne, with dates at festivals like The Secret Garden Party and Urban Art Forms. He was home in April for Creamfields, and inthemix sat him down for a one-on-one with MaRLo. “Even though I write bassline-heavy music, I focus first and foremost of chords, melody and harmonic structure,” he said in that interview. “That’s what I get off on musically.” The remainder of the year will see a host of new studio goodies from Thomas, some of which he’ll get to try out on our dancefloors. ShockOne does his thing on Futurebound’s drum & bass and dubstep label Viper Recordings, and an LP is expected in the second half of 2012. Before that drops, though, he’ll give Chaos Theory – a staple of Knife Party sets – an official release.

Although he’s settled in London, Thomas mused to inthemix that there’s something unique in the Aussie approach. “I think I have a different sense for the music as opposed to someone who has grown up in London. In Australia, there’s less pretension. I had a young dude come up to me at one of my shows and ask, ‘Do you reckon there’s a difference between UK drum & bass and Australian drum & bass?’ That’s the first time I’d heard anyone use the term ‘Australian drum & bass’. Because for him, drum & bass began with Pendulum’s Watercolour. I don’t hear that distinction, but he did. Inadvertently, we’ve created something that’s unique to us.”
