This summer, UK star Elliot Gleave, aka Example, will be bringing his live show to the Stereosonic mainstage alongside Tiesto, Avicii and Calvin Harris. Playing to vast crowds is all in a day’s work for the MC and singer. Having recently wrapped up an arena tour around the UK, he’s currently in the thick of a whirlwind festival season in the Northern Hemisphere, which has so far included slots at T In The Park, Wireless, Benicassim and afternoon honours at the Swedish House Mafia’s Milton Keynes Bowl send-off.
In amongst all of this, he’s been hard at work on the fourth Example album. Example’s Wikipedia page lists an extensive roll-call of guest producers for the November-slated LP, but on the phone to inthemix last week, Gleave revealed he’s actually scaling back. The album’s guest-list is looking a bit like a Stereosonic love-in. “The next single Say Nothing and another two tracks on the album are produced by Dirty South,” he told us down the line from the Spanish desert, where he was shooting the video for that very single. “Tommy Trash has done a song. Benga, Dillon Francis, Alvin Risk have all done tracks. The last album had, like, 12 producers for 14 tracks. This album’s got I think eight producers for 12 tracks.”
Those 12 producers on Gleave’s last album, Playing In The Shadows, included Skream, Laidback Luke, Nero and Michael Woods. As he tells it, album number four will be equally dancefloor-led. “I still listen to a lot of ‘90s grunge,” he added in our chat. “Lyrically, what inspires me are things that are quite personal, emotional and gothic; tales of anguish. But on the musical level, I’m inspired by dubstep, drum & bass, trance, house, and what I wanted to do with this album is take the emotion and the sentiment from grunge and rock and apply it to dance music.”
Earlier this month, Example teamed up with fellow Stereosonic recruit Calvin Harris for festival-geared anthem We’ll Be Coming Back, and we’re guessing they had some fun making this video.
