After naming Minx as the winner in 2011 (and an EMI Music recording contract for Alison Wonderland), the She Can DJ A&R project is back with a line-up of ten new female DJs.

The competition will culminate with the final event at Sydney’s ivy on Wednesday 5 September, where an ultimate winner will be decided. One of the ten will end the night with an EMI recording agreement, an international networking trip and a weekly mix on the Southern Cross Austereo dance music show Party People. The one ultimate She Can DJ winner will be selected from the top ten finalists by a core panel of ambassador judges. This year’s ambassadors include Bart Cools (EMI Music Executive Vice President, Marketing Europe/Rest Of World), Mark Poston (EMI Music Chairman & Senior Vice President Marketing, Australasia), Jason Ellis (Director, Positiva Records), Sarah Main (DJ, Producer and 10 year Pacha Ibiza’s resident), Stereosonic’s co-founder Simon Coyle, amongst others.

So, who’s in the running this time? 2012 saw almost double the entries than the inaugural year, and as EMI Music begins to roll out the concept globally, the top ten female DJ finalists for Australia & New Zealand 2012 have now be announced. Those finalists, in alphabetical order: Alley Oop (SYDNEY),
Cassette (SYDNEY),
Dusk (ADELAIDE), Elly K (SYDNEY), Fingertips (SYDNEY),
Girl Audio (MELBOURNE),
Hannah Parker (BRISBANE), Juliet Fox (MELBOURNE),
Leah Mencel (ADELAIDE) and Natnoiz (SYDNEY). As an introduction to what each of the finalists does, we’ve got exclusive ITM-FM mixes to wrap your ears around.

this years has nothing on last years group.. most of the track selections look like your average mixes floating around on the net filled with the usual european tech house garbage. there are no influences of detroit techno or chicago house classics to be seen. only 1 of the contestants actually uses turntables.

Me thinks this won't be nearly as popular as last years competition as the 10 most popular female DJs in the country all competed last year (this years group does look like they have more personality though)

@ Sounds echoed, why is it so important for them to play old Chicago and Detroit classics, if its not the music that they would like to play?

Girl Audio beat me at YourShot last year. She's pretty freaking good. Her biggest strength is promoting though.

Elly K is a quality disco DJ and often plays vinyl AFAIK.
