Deadmau5 "pulling back" after debuting new live show

On Saturday night in his hometown of Toronto, Joel Zimmerman presented the new-look live set-up he’s been working on. The occasion was the first night of the Veld Music Festival, which saw 105-minute closing set from Deadmau5 on the mainstage, following slots from Steve Angello, Knife Party, Steve Aoki, Chris Lake and more. While we’re still waiting on professional photos to turn up of the live show in full flight, YouTube uploads from fans show the mau5 swapping the ‘Cube’ set-up for a newly-designed, curved podium, with the usual battalion of LEDs around him. Zimmerman also put the helmet aside for a section where he played with an oversized controller that faced the crowd (see the second video below). However, a downpour prevented the show working at full capacity. “Damn rain fucked up a ton of shit, but whatever, that was fun,” he posted on Twitter after the festival. “At least plan C worked.”

Having shown off his new toys to the home crowd, Zimmerman took to his blog to announce he’s taking some time out to recalibrate, admitting he’s “pretty miserable right now”. The post reads: “So heres whats happening. im going to unplug for a wee bit. which doesnt mean im cancelling any upcoming shows or anything, im just gunna slam on the breaks for a bit and force myself to endure some quiet time. in that time, obviously the gears will still be moving, ill still be writing, and the releases will still come out (heads up for something crazy real soon like) and yeah.

“I got a lot of work to do on some stuff. so, best i just chill the fuck out a bit and just get it done, and get it done RIGHT, until im 100% satisfied with it. Then our regularily scheduled program shall continue. but yeah, im basically pretty miserable right now and need to pull the fuck back and figure out whatever the fuck it is i do.”

That oversized controlled looked cool, wish you could hear the sound better though.

That controller is mad... I've actually watched Deadmau5 work the Lemur like a demon, from the vantage point of an upper mezzanine level at Family in Brisbane a few years ago, was a crazy sight actually.
