Markus Schulz voted America’s Best DJ

Despite his German heritage, Stereosonic-bound trance authority Markus Schulz has long called Miami, Florida, home. So close is his alliance to the U.S. that the man was this week voted America’s Best DJ in the annual poll coordinated by DJ Times Magazine and Pioneer DJ. In 2011, the #1 spot went to hard-touring house head Kaskade, who has curiously disappeared from the Top Ten this time despite his highly-successful Freaks Of Nature tour. Similarly, Schulz didn’t figure in 2011’s Top Ten, but he’s obviously had a galvanising 12 months Stateside.
“It is has been an extraordinary time for dance music in the United States over the last couple of years,” Schulz said from the road when he found out the news of his win. “I’d also like to thank the promoters and all the industry people that have worked so hard throughout the years to help DJ culture come of age. Our scene has been built from a foundation of respect and admiration for the music. When I’m on stage doing what I love every week, winning awards is the last thing on my mind. So to win this really means an incredible amount to me, and I am humbled by everyone out there who believes in what I do.”
You’ve got to admire the chutzpah of Dim Mak leader Steve Aoki, who assured fans “#2 is A-OK!!” with a promo poster to match. The 2012 top five is rounded out by Skrillex, BT and Z-Trip. Once again, no sign of DJ Pauly D, who beat out the likes of Diplo, Derrick Carter and Mixmaster Mike in 2010 to claim the #8 spot.
