Official word on the new album may still be in the area of zilch, but that doesn’t mean Daft Punk are laying low. When Paris Fashion Week kicked off at the beginning of the month, the iconic Frenchmen made their own contribution to proceedings, soundtracking Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2013 runway show with a 15-minute custom mix.
The pair got the call in to provide the mix from designer Hedi Slimane (a big deal if you’re into that kind of thing), editing and looping songs from blues artist Junior Kimbrough for the show – the official byline is “Music Junior Kimbrough Edited by Daft Punk”. The show went down a few weeks back, but now the mix has made its way to the internet for an airing outside the realm of the Gallic fashion elite – listen below with Soundcloud, or to hear a nine-minute segment of the mix complete with high fashion, head to YouTube.
In other non-fourth album endeavours, the duo’s Thomas Bangalter recently scored the short film First Point. Meanwhile, rumours about Daft Punk’s first album since 2005’s Human After All have persisted since Chic frontman Nile Rodgers told inthemix in February that he’d been working with the pair on a new record. While the status of the long-awaited fourth album may still be shrouded in mystery, the story behind Daft Punk’s first Australian tour isn’t – ITM recently delved into what went on behind the scenes of the legendary 1998 tour.
