DJ Mag reveals 2012 Top 100 DJs poll results

Image for DJ Mag reveals 2012 Top 100 DJs poll results

The results of the ever-contentious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ poll for 2012 have been announced, with the leading name in trance Armin van Buuren taking the #1 spot. You can read how he did it again in our sit-down with Armin van Buuren from ADE. In 2011, the poll saw a shift in the ranks. After a four-year stranglehold of the #1 position, Armin was unseated by David Guetta. Now, following a strong 12 months at the helm of A State Of Trance and Armada, the Dutchman has reclaimed his spot for a fifth year. In the second and third spots respectively are Stereosonic headliners Tiesto and Avicii, with Guetta now in the #4 spot. Dutch big-room gun and Future Music Festival recruit Hardwell made one of the poll’s biggest jumps to #6.

The results were just announced at a special ceremony during Amsterdam Dance Event. It’s the kick-off of a whirlwind night for Armin. He’s starting things off by DJing at Amsterdam Convention Factory alongside Hardwell, Arty, Sander van Doorn and R3hab, then flying by private jet to London for a party at Ministry Of Sound with Markus Schulz, Thomas Gold, Orjan Nilsen and Sean Tyas.

His return to the top spot of the poll is sure to vindicate the Armin acolytes. “I still believe in melodic, uplifting trance,” the DJ told inthemix this year. “If you listen to A State Of Trance, you’ll see I still support that and I’m not changing my sound. I’ve always made different-sounding tracks: Drowning, Feels So Good. And then I make tracks as Gaia, a track with Orjan Nilsen, or something like Suddenly Summer. I like to vary my palette, and I have no illusions that everyone will love everything I do. Staying stuck in one sound doesn’t inspire me.”

Only ppl taking this list seriously are the hardstyle djs. what a joke.

angy said on the 20th Oct, 2012

Whether you like Armin or not, you can't fault him technically. Like or loathe trance, he really is a DJ's DJ

User_260984 said on the 20th Oct, 2012

bob sinclair makes the list and boys noize doesn't..... gee up! if dj shadow or cut chemist aren't deserved of a rating in the top 100 dj's in the world then we are all kidding ourselves surely... not to mention the fact that 2manydjs / dewaele brothers didn't rate a mention either; which is absolutely criminal considering they are assets to humanity and encompass almost every facet of old school and new school dj in what they do and there aren't really any other dj's that would give any thought to doing what they do.... but yeah bob sinclair; he's been ripping it up on the scene - WTF? really.... surely DJ Mag could proof read / veto bullshit voting and igive this thing one iota of credibility.

NOT 1 Hardcore DJ in there ... YEP THE WORLDS TURNED TO SHIT ! Trance fags everywhere . PUT A SHIRT ON

what an absolute pile of shit.. sven vath at 139... sasha at 103... not a single DC10 dj on there, not seth troller, no jamie jones, not even maceo plex.... this makes me realise how fucking brainless and irrelevant people who read djmag are... what a bunch of cunts...

KraftyNut said on the 20th Oct, 2012

Same thing every year. People are pissed off so and so isn't on there. It's a popularity contest. Look at the results, Armin is number one and rightly so, more hardstyle dis in the top 100 than ever before. I'd say its an apt representation of the current state of edm globally.

zsmiles said on the 20th Oct, 2012

Can't really say someone is the DJ's DJ when they need to pre-mixed.

angy said on the 20th Oct, 2012

He's got a lot more technical ability than most of the chumps you listen to. Get some progressive trance up ya, Dominick! ;)

And everybody - it's a POPULARLY VOTED POLL. Baffles me that people still don't get this. Editorial wise, DJ Mag is one of the tomes of dance music journalism, and still is.

josh_goods said on the 20th Oct, 2012

@ angy I'm sick of people saying that... it is still a reflection of a global poll, and therefore warrants investigation. its fascinating that, until facebook voting, the competition mostly supported DJ's with legacies. to work your way up, was to expand your legacy, and every top DJ was as much about their ability as their history as a DJ. Now you have 20 year olds marching up... wtf

asadi said on the 20th Oct, 2012

forget the list I think I've just fallen for Jeanica
haha good to see Armin reclaim top spot. The only reason being next time I see him, they'll go:
*jesus pose, cue kick*

angy said on the 20th Oct, 2012

You want them to disort the votes it receives? They've ousted plenty of cheats before. Cry moar - it's not an inustry voted poll reflecting credibility, or the talent of the DJs in many case - more of a reflection of the fact America is coming.

ArmySniperDan said on the 20th Oct, 2012

David Guetta can go suck it, as far as I am concerned him, Skrillex, Avicii, DeadMau5, Afrojack, Sweedish House Mafia, Steve Aoki, Dada Life, Calvin Harris, Knife Party, Zedd, and Wolfgang Hunter are played on top 40 pop stations therefore shouldn't of been on this list in the first place

angy said on the 20th Oct, 2012

^^What's the substance behind that claim? Some weak accusations from amateur bloggers? The people in the top 10 really are actually very popular, whether you like or utterly loathe their music.

And do people really feel like their favourite underground DJs need the validation from this poll? None of them want to play on the level of Guetta, or to compromise their sound for a massive audience - I'm at ADE right now, and the likes of Joris Voorn, Sven Vath and Zabiela are still hugely successful - so I hardly think they're craving the validation of a poll like this.

ArmySniperDan said on the 20th Oct, 2012

um Guettas music is nothing more than crappier remixes of top 40 pop and hip hop songs

sonicc said on the 21st Oct, 2012

Daft punk still make it in there because every single one of the top 100 Dj's throw at least 2 Daft punk accapellas over a beat or two per set...

Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,Trash it, change it, mail it ONE MORE TIME!!

CircusMidget said on the 21st Oct, 2012

Quite satisfied with this, Armin has been the true and deserved number 1 for quite a few years now and Guetta was such a joke... Also very pleased with seeing Tiesto at number 1, he really managed to change his style without becoming untrue to himself- saw him in New York last year and his set was brilliant. Only sad about PvD and Ferry sliding so far down- they will always be in my personal Top 5 :-)

Sheng86 said on the 21st Oct, 2012

Daft Punk in 44 ? they haven't done jack shit in 44 years.

khas said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

So much butthurt over the results when everybody knows it's a popularity driven poll. Also taking into account that you can now FB vote which means teenyboppers that have never even been clubbing can click the link spammed to them via their top40's favourite and vote away. It's not worth getting upset over really, the poll has been questionable for half a decade.

412nv said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

Armin can have number one, as he is pretty good.

It just goes to show how much of a joke the is.

I mean

46. Nervo
11. Headhunterz

With Old mate Prydz way down the list.

So funny.

langers2009 said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

i get this isnt looked at seriously, but Mat Zo at 72???

DJ_LG said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

Well with so many people making housey music what do you expect? The fan base is diluted.
For every Hardstyle event/DJ there's probably 100 housey events/DJs.
The top Hardstyle DJs are capturing a greater percentage of their genre's fans.

SeeHoe said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

understand it is a popularity contest but how are the chemical brothers not even in the top 150. they arent dj's but either are the other half of this list?

karlsav said on the 22nd Oct, 2012

Like you could name let alone have seen 3 of the "chumps" I listen to anyway ;)

Adam one

Adam one said on the 23rd Oct, 2012

You only need to look at the rankings for years gone by to see how far things have gone downhill, even when accepting it is really a popularity contest. This was the top 20 in 2007:

1. AVB
2. Tiesto
3. John Digweed
4. PVD
5. Sasha
6. A&B
7. Carl Cox
8. Ferry Corsten
9. Infected Mushroom
10. David Guetta
11. Deep Dish
12. Oakfenfold
13. Marcus Schultz
14. Hernan Cattaneo
15. SVD
16. Eddie Halliwell
17. James Zabiela
18. Astrix
19. Richie Hawtin
20. Marco V

Whilst 7 of the top 20 are common to both lists, the 2012 list looks positively frightful when compared with 2007. There is no doubt about this at all. Whilst not all of those acts in the 2007 list are my cup of tea, they are generally considered to be quality DJs within the genre they are known for (Infected Mushroom being a live act and Astrix being a mystery aside). If you go back further, the lists generally get even better, especially when Sasha and Digweed were ruling the roost.

Random_Kiwi said on the 23rd Oct, 2012

 Who the fuck are these people?!? I'm amazed and astounded at how few of the top 50 names I even recognise...and those I do regonise, are chode smokingly awful :|

Hawtin down to 78

Digweed down to 98

Sasha not even making the list at all :double cry:

No Henry Hernan Danny Howells...

1. Armin van Buuren
2. Tiesto
3. Avicii
4. David Guetta
5. Deadmau5
6. Hardwell
7. Above & Beyond
8. Dash Berlin
9. Afrojack
10. Skrillex
11. Headhunterz
12. Swedish House Mafia
13. Markus Schulz
14. Gareth Emery
15. Steve Aoki

lopsop said on the 25th Oct, 2012

You're wrong about that buddy, this IS nothing more than a Facebook "Like" popularity contest that IS NOT a reflection of a global poll. Why? The majority of people in the world were excluded from voting the past 2 years due to Facebook being banned in those regions and therefore it is impossible for them to vote. Are there no DJ's or fans in these parts of the world? Come on... we're talking hundreds of thousands if not millions of fans excluded. Also, it is ironic how these traditionally are some of the same places that actually care about/use the list to determine fees. The same places where some of these "Top 100" DJ's earn their highest/bloated event fees. :stroke: hmm... wonder if either Trackitdown or DJMag have a vested monetary interest in any of the top ten names? We aint as dumb as you think we is! DUH

In terms of the list itself, the proof is in the pudding as they say... first of all I have been in the game for over ten years of DJ'ing/producing/promoting events in the US/UK/Asia and have never even heard of some of these people. Some of the most relevant, competent and respected DJ's are not even ranked. They really need to either open up voting worldwide or re-brand the poll as US and EU --ONLY-- Facebook "Top 100".

Anyway, IMO because Trackitdown and DJMag dont seem to care about doing a globally accurate and fair voting poll, this list is complete garbage and I for one wont support or buy anything from either of em.

vinyllicker said on the 25th Oct, 2012

It's not worth even looking at these days. Produce a couple of popular tracks of cheese that go well at a festival and you're sorted. Van Burren can f off too, he has single handedly killed off trance over the last 10 years. There's nothing left but his sickly sweet nonsense.

Dream on Cathy, your Husbands Music or lack thereof is an insult, and why DJ Mag even allowed your Husband to compete in the first place is a joke, this is for Electronic Dance Music, not retards remixing crappy top 40 music and pretending to DJ while pressing play on a mac book and playing a pre recorded set

AllintheMind said on the 31st Jan, 2013

Whoever says AvB is great really has no idea what djing is. What, 2 cdjs, a mixer, and the beatport trance top 100?
Electronic music, regardless of genre, is and always has been a boy's club. I do not envy any of them though. The music industry is full of toxic people. It always has been. That's why few women are interested in the fame.

ArmySniperDan said on the 15th Mar, 2013

something David The Hack Guetta doesn't Realize, if you are remixing top 40 puke tracks, then you're a top 40 DJ, not an EDM DJ, EDM artist don't use auto tune singing bottom of the barrel talent like Rhianna, Nicki Minaj and so on
