Steve Aoki's week: Essential Mix, then stage dive fail

From the dizzying heights of Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 studio to the quite literal lows of the stage he fell off, Steve Aoki’s week has been one of extremes. It began well enough with a visit to the BBC for his first Essential Mix in four years, two hours of typically-thumping Aoki track selection featuring cuts from Dim Mak signees Datsik and Infected Mushroom, alongside plenty of his own material.
“I’m going to take you on a journey through the world of Dim Mak,” Aoki said of his handiwork. “This Essential Mix is the Wonderland 2.0 mix where I’ve mixed most of the club ready remixes from my album Wonderland. My second track is a new single called Singularity... a collaboration I produced with Angger Dimas. I also debuted my new collaboration with Knife Party called Piledriver deeper in the mix.” Polishing off a second Essential Mix ought to have been the kick off to a very good Saturday for Aoki. After all, the Dim Mak boss is in good company: fellow 2012 mixers include the esteemed likes of Nicolas Jaar, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Photek and Hot Chip.
But alas, the lucky streak wasn’t to last – rather, his show in Puerto Rico that very night ended in hospitalisation following a stage dive gone wrong. In the midst of his usual mid-show theatrics, Aoki tried to jump from the stage onto a trampoline… instead rebounding smack bang into the corner of the stage, lying defeated while security rush to his aid. “I wanna let everyone know that I’m A-OK! Went to hospital got CT Scans and no spinal injuries from my stagedive trampoline fail!” Aoki later assured on Twitter. “Ironic my tee says ‘watch your neck’”. Watch the self-proclaimed stagediving fail from around the 35 second mark and stream the mix below.
