EMC 2012: Tiesto reveals what happened to that Deadmau5 collab

The inaugural edition of Electronic Music Conference kicked off this morning and to open proceedings in a big way, EMC went straight to the top: enlisting the world’s biggest DJ for the first session of the day. Local scene stalwart Grant Smillie sat down with none other than Tiesto for an engaging 45-minute chat and with the conversation spanning his motivations, getting crazy with Axwell and how he feels about trance now, there was plenty of Tijs to get through. But one of the most interesting revelations from the session centred on Tiesto’s collaborations – in particular, that track with Deadmau5.
Early last year, Tiesto revealed that he and Joel Zimmerman had been in the studio together. “Well, finished the groundwork for a new track with tiesto tonight…woop!” Zimmerman confirmed at the time. “Gunna leave him with the stems for now while i tour around for a bit, then we’ll crack on with it later! we so excited.” But 18-odd months down the track, that song is yet to surface. So what happened to the Tiesto/Deadmau5 collab’?
“I was in the studio with Deadmau5 in Toronto once, but the track was only okay so we didn’t release it, “ Tijs told the EMC audience. Grant Smillie also asked whether the Stereosonic headliner would consider going to work on an R&B collaboration. “No, not really,” he answered. “That’s up to David Guetta and Calvin Harris. I don’t mean that in a bad way, they did amazing things for the scene. But I’ll always be more of an indie guy. “
But that’s only scratching the surface of what Tiesto and Smillie discussed in their session. Stay tuned for more from the conference and follow the EMC Twitter for live updates.
