Ingrosso talks feud with "f*cking douchebag" DJ Sneak

In a year of musical high-points, 2012 has not been without its grudges, too. One of the most outspoken critics of dance music’s ‘commercial’ boom, and its biggest players, has been Chicago house vet DJ Sneak. In March, he turned his attention to the Swedish House Mafia, taking issue with the ‘House’ part of its name.

“It’s a sad thing when the Swedish House Mafia is being paid big money to come to the U.S. to play house music,” Sneak argued in an interview with DJ Mag earlier this year, setting the storm-in-a-teacup in motion. “For the record, they do not play house music.” From there, there was a string of angry exchanges between Sneak and the Swedes – at one end of the ring, the self-appointed house gatekeeper and at the other, the stadium-filling commercial success stories. Then, of course, there was Sneak’s triumphant “TODAY HOUSE MUSIC WINS!!!” post after the trio announced they were calling it quits.

So when inthemix got the SHM’s Sebastian Ingrosso on the phone to talk about the group’s One Last Tour plans last month, we made sure to quiz the Refune Records boss about the war of words that kept sparking up in 2012.

“To be honest with you, [Sneak] is a smart man,” Ingrosso told inthemix. “He just went on us because he gained around 6,900 followers in one week. So that was just a marketing thing. It was a great marketing plan from his side, I must give him that. But I think that he is a fucking douchebag, also.”

Ingrosso also added that he’s perplexed by the sniping. “I’m sorry if we made a hit! What should we do? We just make music for what we feel, that’s why SHM became big in the first place. You had trance guys who made big melodies, but we kind of put that into big room house music. Some techno guys hate on the successful DJs and I’m sorry, but why? For what reason? It’s like, ‘Oh I hate Jay-Z because he is a rapper and he’s so successful.’ How can you hate someone’s music? It’s weird. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. Don’t punish yourself!”

Some people will always hate success.. people use the word "sellout" like it's easy to make a worldwide hit

Yeah its really hard and you need to be a f*cking amazing producer to make a world wide hit as opposed to forcing it down every avenue possible. Oh by the f*cking way have you heard gangnam style? f*cking top notch production there. D*ckhead.

As tiring as Sneak is getting there is a point he can never lose the argument.

If the Swedish House Mafia is so happy with what it produces then they should talk about it honestly. They clearly think they need the credibility of associating themselves with house music.

Their music is pop music. They are like Britney Spears, Psy, The Macarena, Rhianna and co but don't seem to want to accept it. They make gimmicky shit that will be forgotten in a few months. Big deal, it is not something that needs to continually be rehashed.

I do agree that all Sneak is doing is trying to keep himself relevant which I why I wish he would just shut up.

Basically, It's like a man running around a shopping centre asking people to convert to islam, whilst munching on pork knuckles & then mohammed comes in and starts going ape sh*t

A "worldwide hit" pretty much implies that it's generic enough to moderately appeal to anyone. That's not, however, implying that it requires even the slightest amount of musical talent. Just a decent production team and smart marketing.
While you can't hate on the business reasons to churn out cheesy, mass-appealing dance music (as you wouldn't for any product in the world that appeals to the average person) you have to question their ability to call it 'house' music. Let's just call it what it is; EDM. Dusty, vanillla-flavoured, uninspired, bastard-faced EDM.

@lawlietskyy Why are you so jaded and filled with vitriol? A guy voices his non-offensive opinion, so you call him a dickhead because you disagree. Are you really finding it that hard to come to terms with the fact that a) there is and will continue to be "worldwide hits" which you and many others consider mediocre music, and b) there are and will continue to be people who don't think like you do. Grow up man.

You gotta respect the fact the house guys revere the term house like a religion, a religion they helped build and are trying to maintain ... You then see these 3 knob fiddling morons using that term to cha-ching themselves to the top. I'd have no problem with SHM if they didn't rape the term 'house music' and use it to sell.

@ Iggz ... "A guy voices his non-offensive opinions..."

I find his level of retardation, quite offensive.
