When it comes to Daft Punk, you get used to unsubstantiated hype. That’s unfortunately where we will file away those persistent rumours that the duo would be back to headline Coachella, the iconic festival in the Californian desert. However, Coachella has confirmed a hefty line-up led by Blur, The Stone Roses and Phoenix, with the dance side of things provided for by Bassnectar, Hot Chip, Dog Blood, Luciano, Wolfgang Gartner, Pretty Lights, James Blake, Hardwell and so many more. Plus: Jurassic 5 is back together! The festival takes place over two weekends, April 12th-14th and 19th-21st, at Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California.
When you dig deep down in the electronic side of the line-up, there’s plenty of depth. There’s Paul Kalkbrenner, Loco Dice, TNGHT, Seth Troxler, Cassy, Four Tet, Julio Bashmore and even the festival-shy DJ Harvey. For the ‘bigger’ side of the spectrum, there’s certainly plenty on show as well, plus iconic acts like New Order and Roni Size.
With Daft Punk’s new album vaguely expected to drop out of nowhere sometime in 2013, Coachella seemed to be the logical place for their live return. In April 2006, on the final stretch of a scorching Saturday in the Indio desert, Depeche Mode had just powered through a greatest-hits set on the Coachella mainstage. Then, over in the Sahara tent, the big moment of the festival arrived: a heavy curtain drew back to a towering pyramid manned by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, who proceeded to deliver 75 game-changing minutes. We wait in hope.
