Maceo Plex steps up for 'DJ-Kicks'

One of the most sought-after stars in house and techno, and a staple of our Most Wanted Tours lists, Maceo Plex is set to mix the first DJ-Kicks volume for 2013. For his entry to the esteemed series, the DJ dug through 20 years of records to come up with 18 gems.
“For the last three years at least, the big trend has been early ‘90s house,” he says in the mix’s press notes. “Everything’s a throwback. I think it’s the right time to put out something that’s a little more deep and futuristic again.
“A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital.
“The whole mix is comprised of vinyl-only tracks that are not going to be out on digital other than the DJ-Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved. I mean I love a lot of new music, but there wasn’t anything that I wanted to represent what I’m trying to do with the mix.”
The last few years have been a whirlwind run for the U.S. producer otherwise known as Eric Estornel, thanks to his releases on Crosstown Rebels (who also released his debut album), No.19 Music and his own Ellum Audio. Then of course there’s his Maetrik guise, which deals in more streamlined techno.
Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus identified his studio talents and recruited him to make a house album. “The man is very good at A&R,” quipped Estornel to DJ Mag USA. “I want to add a little more ‘oomph’ to things,” he said of his approach to DJing in that interview. “Even if it is a slow, deep, really sexy, really beautiful track, it’s got to have ‘oomph’ underneath, which comes from my electro/techno background, so it is not a pure sound – it is a little crossover. If you are into techno, you can dig it. If you are into house, you can also dig it.”
Unsurprisingly plenty of people have been digging it. You can take a listen to his Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 from 2012 as a reminder. He stocks it out with his own productions alongside other dancefloor burners. Maceo Plex’s DJ-Kicks is released on April 29, available for full digital download or on CD.
