WTF: Daft Punk debuting new album in regional Australian town

UPDATE: Technology researchers did some sleuthing for inthemix, and the domain was purchased by Sony Australia yesterday.

With a reputation as innovators, Daft Punk have never really played by the rules. Even still, reports that the French duo are set to unveil their much-hyped forthcoming album Random Access Memories in a town with a population of 2,000 has come as a particular shock. According to the Herald Sun and triple j, Daft Punk are set to host their “global album launch party” in the Australian town of Wee Waa, situated in the North West of regional New South Wales.

Sound like a joke? The Wee Waa council thought so, too. Speaking to the Narrabri Courier (the original source of the story), Shire Mayor Conrad Bolton told that he though a “mate was pulling my leg” when he got the call that Sony wanted to bring arguably the most famous dance act in the world to the small town. “We think Wee Waa is so uniquely Australian, so the folks at Sony Music along with Daft Punk thought it fitted the bill perfectly,” Bolton explained. “Daft Punk is known for breaking down barriers and coming up with new creative, innovative ideas to launch their albums.” Seeking clarification, inthemix spoke to a representative from Sony who remained predictably coy on the subject, neither confirming nor denying the Wee Waa event.

The event, if it’s to be believed, is set for the night of May 17 – the same day Random Access Memories officially drops. Tickets are limited to 4000, but that’s not the only hurdle you’ll have to cross to get to the show: Wee Waa is about eight hours drive from Sydney and doesn’t have a commercial airport. The last vital piece of information we have for now? The council have confirmed that Daft Punk will not be performing at the Wee Waa show. We’ll bring further updates as they come – and yes, we’re as perplexed as you are.

I think the "show" they refer to is the Annual Wee Waa show, i.e. rides, fairly floss, showbags etc. The launch (which to be honest I don't believe is happening) is a separate event to the Wee Waa show.

Actually scratch that, I have no idea what the hell is going on or what to think..

All of this talk about the new Daft Punk album seems to ignore the fact that Human After All was a piece of shit.

Anyone can register a domain name: - It's pretty easy.
(Before anymore unconfirmed rumours start flying around as well, we're definitely not the ones bringing Daft Punk to Australia)

You can fly in to Narrabri which is, distance considering, a stone's throw from Wee Waa.
