Stacy could be anyone; your daughter, your best friend or your sister. Written by Brisbane playwright Margery Forde and directed by Jess Conoplia, X-stacy explores the issue of recreational drug use within dance culture.

“It’s a fact that drugs exist in the dance cultures of just about any metropolitan area in Australia,” director Jess Conoplia says. “Chances are, everyone who goes clubbing either has used recreational drugs or knows people who do.”

Jess says the play is realistic about drug use. “X-stacy is neither pro-drugs or anti-drugs. It’s designed more to stimulate conversation between parents and kids. There are those in the play who don’t take drugs, those who do and have a great time and those who do and get into trouble. In that sense it’s pretty realistic.

“There is such a misconception that recreational drug users are the ‘cliched’ junkie on the street corner. The sooner it’s accepted that they are your normal, everyday people-parents, doctors, mechanics, students, anyone- the sooner communities can approach drug education effectively.

X-stacy is realistic about what goes on in the dance culture- and helps young people make an informed decision about recreational drug use.”

A talented Brisbane cast and crew combine to provide a realistic atmosphere within the dance club scene. DJ Erther and Justin Overell from graphic design company Ion provide the sounds and visual effects to simulate the Crystal club as depicted in the play. The smooth voice of Brisbane’s MC Shureshock (Cameron Brown of Zephyr Timbre) has also been recorded for the show.

X-stacy opens Thursday 17 July and runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 16 August. Tickets are $20 adults and $15 concession. Bookings and information from The Nash Theatre, 220 Brunswick St (old Valley Twin cinemas), 07 3257 3000.
