David Holmes, producer of some of the deepest, darkest and dirtiest music of the past decade, will be in Australia for the first time to perform at the Big Day Out and will take time out from the event to perform his only Sydney club show at The Gaelic Club in Surry Hills on Friday, January 23.
Formerly a member of the Disco Evangelists (with Ashley Beedle), Holmes released his first solo effort (‘Johnny Favourite’) on Warp Records, and signed with Sabres of Paradise as a solo artist around the same time. His debut album ‘This Film’s Crap, Let’s Slash The Seats’ emerged shortly after in 1995, to critical acclaim. His follow up, ‘Let’s Get Killed’, provided two UK Top 40 singles with ‘Don’t Die Just Yet’ and ‘My Mate Paul’. His next album ‘Bow Down To The Exit Sign’, recorded as the score for a screenplay in progress, featured Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Jon Spencer, Martina Toppeley-Bird, and poet Carl Hancock Rux. His latest project, The Free Association is a surreal blend of orchestral manoeuvres with dirty horns, punchy beats and twangy bass, finding the space where country blues meets funk and free jazz.
Holmes started his DJing career aged 15, playing soul and R ‘n’ B in Belfast pubs. Check him in his first ever Sydney club appearance alongside DJs Simon Caldwell, Frenzie & special guests.
