Over the past 12 months, a small collective of like-minded friends otherwise known as the 162 Massive have, with remarkable regularity, put their efforts in to a monthly night at The Emerald Room called Beats Me.  And now, to celebrate their 12 months of quality parties, they’re throwing a special 1st birthday bash on Saturday, 19 March.

The 162 Massive have strived to achieve a different approach to the principles of Brisbane clubbing culture, by breaking down the genre barrier and offering an eclectic blend of DJs, MCs and the occasional live musician. Starting as a humble going away party for some good friends, they realised they’d stumbled onto a night of shenanigans that would satisfy even some of the most jaded punters.

From the very beginning, the 162 Massive have incorporated three principals into the ethos of Beats Me, which they’ve stuck to ever since:

1. Embrace a diverse variety of musical genres. From breaks to booty, from electro to funk, hip hop, acid big beat, break beat and even a dose of disco. Beats Me encourages DJs to step away from their pigeonholed status and play what ever they feel would heat up the dance floor.

2. To highlight the fun and effectiveness of their multi-genre policy, each month Beats Me has featured a session of ‘back to back to back to back’ mixing from all the DJs on the bill for the last hour or two of the night. These have proven to be quite successful, with the proof being in the full dance floor and lack of people sitting down at the end of each night.

3. Always have at least one female DJ on the bill, which Beats Me has successfully carried out, and they’ve even featured one night of all female talent – a very triumphant evening!

The 162 Massive Chose the Emerald Room for its intimate atmosphere and as a breath of fresh air from the well-known valley venues.  Over the past 12 months, as well as the 162 Massive hosts (Funkedub, G-nome and Mr Krinkle), Beats Me has featured acts such as Joey Jeremiah (Kid Kay Ferris), Nikkenheimer (Superfluid- live drumming), Fr1day, Dj Cam, Fetus (aka Dr Dom), Shards, Void DJ, Affix, DJ Cat Kid, Fluent JB, Dub Matrix, She-Rox, Marlee, Minxalicious and MCs from the Sewing Circle as well as MC Styles.

On Saturday 19 March, the Beats Me 1st Birthday celebrations with feature one of Brisbane’s premier drum ‘n bass DJs, Erther – but he won’t be playing DnB! Fr1day will also be back behind the decks with his irresistible blend of booty, breaks, electro and techno action.  Added to this will be local turntable master Affix with a the talented lyricist from New Yorks “The Apostles”, as well as The Griot. Naturally, the complete 162 Massive of Funkedub, G-nome and Mr Krinkle will also be in effect behind the decks.

So now you know the lowdown … the 162 Massive are looking forward to seeing you on the dancefloor and at the bar. As always, the night is 100% free.
