Adelaide DJ Luke Lombe has been a long time fiend for electro house, and spoke to me recently about his drive to push his flavour of choice on the people of our fair city in 2006. Luke’s been breaking people in on the stuff at the likes of Garage Bar, and Moskva (Vodka bar) for long enough to realize that to take any subgenre of dance music and make something of it, it takes organization and cooperation. The Adelaide Breaks Collective are another living example of this approach in practice, and it works.

Teaming up with DJ Reelax, the pair compared notes and came up with ‘Shabooka Shake.’ The party’s intentions are difficult to mistake, with its flyer sporting the simple statement: ‘it’s all about electro.’ Luke and Reelax are far from alone in the passion for these tunes, as the genre itself seems to have launched a steady siege on House music the world over. For their debut party the lads decided to bring in a master of the style, DJ and Producer Craig Obey from Sydney, hot on the heels of his ‘Eat Me Beat (It’s Summer)’ EP on the Hustle label. This is Craig’s first visit to Adelaide, so let’s show him and the rest of Australia that we’re ready for electro!

With a debut long player ‘Elektric Sounds’ set for imminent release, Craig’s tunes are loaded with tight and tuneful synthetic licks. You can expect nothing but digital sunshine from these selectors once the lights go down at Garage Bar! With Minx adding to the line-up and two live musicians also appearing, the venue will be open to the breeze and radiating Summer love. Look out for Yanya Boston and Katrina Chavez’ respective percussive and vocal talents at the first ‘Shabooka Shake’ and get those dancin’ shoes ready. Let this be the first of many great Shabooka Shake-downs!

Garage Bar is at 170 Waymouth St (Light Square) and the show is on January 25th. It’s $10 at the door and the party’s rockin’ from 9pm til late.
