If you’ve missed the headlines, then you must entered your winter hibernation early this year. The biggest dance music festival that’s ever graced an Adelaide winter is on it’s way, and the main attractions are not to be sneezed at, whether you’ve got a case of the season’s sniffles or not. ‘We Love Sounds’ presented by Eclipse Touring, Inthemix.com.au and the Smirnoff Experience is responsible for a veritable feast of breakbeats, with the Grand-daddy of turntablism at the top of the list.
If you caught Grandmaster Flash at Thebbie Theatre in 2003, you’ll be up to speed on his vaudevillian showmanship (and incredible talent). The Flashster provides more than tricks and tasty selections, rather he takes his audiences on a trip through hip hop history, leaving us with his ‘message’ and a rolling into an afternoon program of wicked beats provided by some of the world, and Australia’s finest.
For lovers of breaks James Zabiela will be representing, along with the UK trio Koma & Bones. Two names, three guys… go figure. At the higher BPM end of the stick we have some fine fellows for the dnb massive, with Patife flying in from Brazil (frequent collaborator with DJ Marky and key proponent of the Brazilian dnb breakout in the 90’s) and Mampi Swift, the twisted giant of dark d’n’b driving his turnies into the night. Cleveland Watkiss and IC-3 both fly in from the UK to join the roll-call to MC for these massive names.
For those who like it live and local, The Bird will be bringing their intricate (and difficult to define) live band down from Sydney for a follow up to their support for Kosheen last December. Australia’s three times DMC champ and world #5 turntablist Staen-1 will be playing a hip hop set with the lostralian himself: MC Delta. General Knowledge, fresh off their Roc Raida support will be doing their live MC show, and for those who like to laugh, the Casio Bros will be taking the hip-hop piss. Look out for their super-flexible dancing accomplices, The Cassettes… their show just gets bigger and bigger!
That leaves a few more big names from the Adelaide circuit with Style High Club, Beatsmugglers and The Levitators all locked in for sets, and for the genre purists, you can rest assured that your style, be it breaks, dnb or hip hop will be consistently well catered for with supporting DJs and separate stages running all day. A note to the hip hop heads: Flash is on at 3pm, and the downtempo beats wind up early enough for the massive to move on to Loop Troop and People Under the Stairs at Fowlers. Look out for more news about late additions, set times and an equally awesome afterparty right here in the coming weeks!
