If you dropped Kosheen, Massive Attack and Nu:Breed in a blender, the product would sound a lot like a Brisbane live act, My Ninja Lover. Fronted by the sensual vocal talents of Manta Ray, fellow beat-makers Porl DeVille and Chris Buckridge produce a range of live breaks that range from cruisey dub through to thrilling dnb. With an approach and sonic spectrum reminiscent of Leftfield, their music squelches, bleeps, throbs and oozes into your subconscious… and your dancing shoes. Winners of the Nokia ‘Connecting Beats’ competion, last year their debut EP ‘Silk & Daggers’ saw the group launch onto TripleJ airwaves with the track ‘Tin Cat’ while the album’s finish and depth transcend the success of the first single. The video for the track can be found at their MySpace page (look left).
This weekend, Adelaide’s lucky enough to score a double dose of My Ninja Lover, as the trio bring their live show to town to support the UK’s Artificial Intelligence, followed by a side show at the Crown & Sceptre- Winter Breakdown. Eclipse Touring and the Breakdown party series are dedicated to bringing you the best in live dance music entertainment, and this instance sees local groove unit The New White Sneakers opening for MNL.
If you like your dance music live, and can’t resist a wicked break, then make your way to see AI or Winter Breakdown this weekend… you won’t regret it. MNL perform live at Earth and Crown & Sceptre respectively, Friday and Saturday night. Check out the Whatson for more gig details.
