Although it’s not yet a problem for those of us who dwell in the inner-city, a rather interesting precedent has been set in the regional NSW town of Newcastle, where the local council have made the rather contentious decision to ban bars, clubs and pubs from serving shots. No more Jaeger bombs for our Steel City friends it would seem!
The ban comes in the face of attempts by police and the local council to curb the anti-social behaviour attributed to binge drinking. A recent spate of violent incidents were the catalyst for the prohibition, with Rolly de With of the Newcastle Liquor Accord remarking to news.com.au; “Sure, the vast majority act and drink responsibly and they behave. But there is always the minority who screw it up for the majority.”
Could we potentially see similar rules being put in place in metropolitan areas? Only time will tell. In the interim, perhaps you could sink a shot or two this weekend, in remembrance of Newcastle’s sober party-people.

'Shots' have been banned in canberra for years, as they are 'irresponsible service of alcohol' (mind you in canberra you dont legally need an RSA to work behind a bar). How we get around it in the capital is that we dont sell 'shots', but 'layered cocktails', 'short cocktails', or '30ml cocktails'. Also, remember, that it is the traditional way to consume some alcohollic products, i.e. tequilla, whiskeys (neat

technically, a jaeger bomb is not a shot. and just what is defined as a 'shot'? what happens if i were to serve the same amount of alcohol as contained in a shot glass, but in a 'normal' glass??? hmmm.

Irony anyone? Who gets drunk off shots? I'm sure nearly everyone who drinks gets drunk off beer, rtds and post-mix. I doubt that banning shots will have any impact on binge drinking.

newcastle is terrible for fighting and brawling - but i dunno whether shots are the problem. since moving to sydney I feel much safer walking down the street in the city at night, up there u gotta be on guard all the time and be careful of everyone u walk past on the footpath. still, the chick fights can be pretty amusing!

I was in Newcastle last week and got rather drunk. As the bar was no smoking I went outside for a drunken ciggie and the bouncer advised me that I was looking a little worse for wear and that I would be permitted to re-enter the bar, but wouldnt be allowed back out for a ciggie unless I was leaving the premises. I decided to switch to water for a while. I thought it very refreshing that a bouncer would have a quiet word and give you the benefit of the doubt and allow me the opportunity to behave and not make a complete arse of myself. Well done that man and the City of Newcastle for promoting responsible drinking.

And so the draconian management of Newcastle continues with little or no thought to the tourism ramifications. This was decided by the liquor accord to stave off a curfew system which the police are trying to get council to back which would see licenced venues enforcing a 1am lockdown with a 3am shutdown curfew... Now my question is how is this going to solve a problem which is caused by excess?? Shut the venues at three and there will be the better part of 10000 people roaming the streets looking for something to do loaded up to there eyeballs. Surely a solution would be to let the venues operate longer that way natural attrition sets the closing time and people go home when they have had enough. And on the flip side of that Newcastle Council needs to ensure that there is enough public transport operating at those times to move the crowds of people on their way home. Also for them to say that they do not see the influence of ICE or other stimulants in these cases is just blind ignorance.

Jaeger Bombs aren't even shots. They are a mixed drink. And banning shots won't help the problem, I agree it will just mean people will drink more of everything else. If you really want to ban violent drinks, get rid of Bourbons and Rums, as so many people get rowdy specifically on these drinks
phipps108 says...
thats bullshit ! there are so many drinks you can ask for. i don't quite understand why the jaeger bomb should be banned ! it's bull and don't agree with it at all

what is a jager bomb?
seanyawake says...
Pretty stupid if you ask me, whats the diff drinking a jager say to a 151 or absinthe shot.. why not ban all shot all together.. STUPID!! But as a bartender jager bombs are the most fkn annoying drink to make, and every 2nd person orders them.. Plus its really not a good mix, cos alcohol is a downer/depressant and redbull is an upper, so ur body doesnt really know how to react to what your putting in, and jager also causes hangovers - darker the liqueur/spirit the more impurities is has, so therefore the bigger hangover you have...
