As if we didn’t have enough festivals to be excited about already… But wait there’s more! Rumours circulating in music industry circles suggest that one of America’s biggest, best and most talked about festivals Coachella will be coming to Australia. The festival is tipped to visit our shores in time for the summer season of 2009.

Coachella is a three-day annual music and arts festival held at the beautiful Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. While there’s plenty of art featured at the festival, it’s more regarded for the legendary performances that it’s hosted across alternative rock, hip hop and electronica . Performances that have included the likes of Jane’s Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails and The Beastie Boys strutting their stuff. Not to mention a particularly high-impact performance from Daft Punk at last year’s festival! The act’s first performance in the US since 1997, it was the subject of millions of YouTube downloads and arguably responsible for establishing the mystique that now exists around the French robot rockers.

This year’s Coachella was marked by memorable performances from Bjork, Arcade Fire, The Arctic Monkeys, indie-electro rockers LCD Sound System as an appearance onstage by none other than Scarlett Johansson who joined Jesus and Mary Chain to perform a rendition of Just Like Honey from her film Lost in Translation. You can check out some memorable clips below!

In a relatively short space of time Coachella has cemented its position as a ‘must-go’ festival on the world calendar, right up there with Glastonbury in the UK, Fuji Rock in Japan and Exit Festival in Serbia. The million dollar question (quite literally) is will the festival provoke the same response locally?

So, will we be getting down to the sounds of Coachella in the summer of ’09 and if so, which mega acts will they be bringing down for the party? Stay tuned to inthemix for updates.
