If you’ve had anything more than a passing interest in turntablism over the past few years, the name DJ Kentaro will no doubt be recognised to you. The legendary Japanese DJ shot to notoriety as the first entrant to ever win the worldwide DMC Championships with a perfect score.
Since his history making DMC Championships win, which happened back in 2002, he’s forged out a reputation far beyond the turntablist scene, signing to UK label Ninja Tune for the release of his debut artist album. ‘Enter’ was released earlier this year and featured collaborations with Pharcyde and Spank Rock, mixing elements of hip-hop, beats, breaks, electro and drum & bass.
Having never toured Australian shores, up until now his many fans have had to be content to watch live footage on YouTube (check some of the most impressive clips below!), but this November inthemix and Civil Society are bringing him to venues around the country. If Kentaro wasn’t enough of a drawcard, then maybe DJ Dexter (ex- The Avalanches) will sweeten the deal!
