We’re not entirely sure what to make of this one… but if you’re looking to feed your nostalgic urges this summer, then perhaps you’d like to take a trip back to the early 90s courtesy of the most famous white-trash rapper ever (other than Eminem, of course…) Yes, you read the headliner correct; Vanilla Ice is heading to Oz!
Ice, or as he’s know to his mum; Robert Van Winkle, has sold more than twenty million records around the world and is best known for his 1990 hit ‘Ice Ice Baby’. It led to him starring in the appropriately named movie ‘Cool As Ice’ the following year, which won him the Gold Raspberry Award for ‘Worst New Star’.
Although a certified superstar when he had his 15 minutes of fame, his fall from grace was brutal. Faced with a lawsuit for sampling the Queen and David Bowie track ‘Under Pressure’ for ‘Ice Ice Baby’ without consent, he then came under fire also biting his iconic “ice ice baby, too cold, too cold” chant from Alpha Phi Alpha, a US national black college fraternity. In the end, Van Winkle’s unraveling came when his stage persona as a street-smart rapper from the ghetto was discovered to be entirely false.
On his Australian tour Vanilla Ice will be joined by a DJ and drummer, and alongside his hits ‘Ice Ice Baby’ and ‘Play That Funky Music’ it’s reported that he’ll be doing covers of tracks like ‘Satisfaction’ by the Rolling Stones and ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ by AC/DC. He’ll be joined on some dates by Kid Kenobi & MC Shureshock and The Stafford Brothers.
